The breed is listed as one of the world's largest dogs. In the breed standards set by the American Kennel Club, an upper height limit of 28 inches is set with weight between 130 to 180 pounds. The breed was developed from dogs kept at monasteries along the Swiss/Italian border. Guest houses for travellers were maintained by the monks and the dogs were kept as companions and guard dogs. The dogs were also adept at locating people lost in the snow.

Today the dogs are still used for search and rescue. Pets are used in obedience classes, carting and weight-pulling. As one of the largest of the world's dog breeds they are best suited to country living or suburbia. They are expensive to feed. They can also suffer from several genetic disorders. Because of the potential for inheritable diseases, buyers should ensure that they contact only reputable breeders when looking for a dog.

Two of the hereditary problems which can be detected by testing before a dog is used for breeding are hip and elbow dysplasia. Dogs with these conditions often suffer from arthritis later in life. Ectropion is another genetic disorder passed on to any progeny. The eyelid, usually the lower, turns outwards. This can result in episodes of conjunctivitis. Large breeds are also subject to bloat. This can be usually be prevented by feeding small meals through the day.

The body is strong and substantial. They have large heads. The eyes are dark brown with an intelligent, friendly expression. The fur is thick and dense. There are rough- and smooth-coated varieties. Regular brushing will help keep them looking good. They slobber a lot and are messy eaters. Colors for purebred dogs are restricted to red-brindle, brindle and mahogany. They often have black masks with white blazes. The chest, forelegs, collar and tip of the tail are also white.

Twice a year, the coat will be shed and brushing will help remove the loose hairs. Regular bathing is not recommended. Use a mild soap so that natural oils in the coat are depleted as little as possible. During summer, the dogs should always have shade and water available. They can become stressed if unable to cool down. Restrict exertion when the weather is hot. The average lifespan is eight to ten years.

Even when young, these dogs are so heavy that they need to be obedient. They should also be socialized while young. Train them not to jump up on people. The dogs are very intelligent and have kindly, patient dispositions.

With so much weight to carry, strong legs and well-formed feet are essential. If you would like a St Bernard, be sure to contact reputable St Bernard breeders. They will be able to help you choose the ideal companion.

Choosing the Right Dog

By Allyson Westcot

Chances are good that there are dog breeds that you like. Many dog lovers fall head over heels in love with a breed and select that type of dog when they want a new pet or a rescue dog. But there are plenty more things to think about when getting a new dog than breed and appearance. That favorite breed might not be the right one for your home or way of life.

When choosing a new dog, you'll no doubt be won over by the individual dog's personality. But it's a smart idea to grasp your limits prior to starting looking. Decide on the age of the dog you would like, the size that's best for you and the personality and energy level prior to starting looking. This can help make sure you get a dog that's actually compatible with you.

Everyone loves adorable puppies, but there are several advantages to adopting an older dog, too. Puppies are high-energy and high upkeep. They have never walked with a dog leash or been trained, and will take a great deal of time to teach these things. Older dogs have most likely been walked with a dog harness, they may be potty-trained and they may have already lost all the unacceptable habits that may form in puppies like barking and chewing. Click here for a selection of harnesses and products to help train your dog.

There's also the chance an older dog never learned these things, but in spite of the general belief that older dogs can't learn new tricks, they're often much easier to train. They would like to please you, and are usually so glad to have a home that they settle in pretty easily. If you live a high-energy way of life, a puppy or young dog may be best. If you lead a more sedentary life, it could be easier to adjust with an older dog.

Size is also significant. If you live in a tiny home or a particularly constrained living space, a Great Dane likely isn't the best choice. In a high traffic household, a toy dog might really be at risk of getting stepped on. Think about these pitfalls when choosing a dog.

Pet Sitting At The Home

By Johnny Chan

One of the services which is on a rise presently is Home Pet Care. In order to enhance their finances, pet care workers are often willing to provide their services in the homes of the customers. Besides being beneficial to the customer it also helps that the pet is in its comfort zone, this makes taking care of it easier rather than subject the pet to a new unknown environment.

Subjecting a pet to a new and unknown environment and that too in the absence of its owner often makes the pet agitated and it will be a herculean task for the pet sitter to soothe the pet. Research by experts has proved that it is advantageous for pet sitters to pet sit at the homes of the clients keeping in mind the interest and comfort of the animals.

Stress does not spare animals also. They might face a lot of stress on a daily basis. However, if the owner takes care of the pet nicely, then the pet will be stress-free. It is important that you involve your pet in games and exercises so that he stays active physically and mentally.

You can distinguish easily between an experienced and a non-experienced pet sitter as an experienced pet sitter finds it easy to take care of the pets and keeps them happy. The important task is to keep the dog away from the stress to accomplish his main task successfully.

We give you a few services that the client may ask the pet sitter to perform along with the services he offers:

1. Taking the pet to the vet's in event of it being a day for shot or vaccination. You should be ready for such situations and heed to customer's bidding.

2. The customer may provide you with chew toys and treats for the pet. He will expect that you give the pet the products from time to time. You should always be willing to do it for the owner.

3. Ensure that you keep the pet safe and away from any form of perils. Also if specified by the owner ensure that the pet does not go to rooms where there is a small child. Follow all instructions given by the pet owner.

4. Watering the plants! Yes, some customers may ask you to water their plants indoors and outdoors. So do not let such request take you by surprise.

5. You should be ready and equipped with all that you need in case of 'accident' indoors to clean up the waste and get rid of it in a proper way. You should ask the owner to provide you with a few plastic bags and cleaning equipment outside in such cases to handle the situation better.

6. Keeping the area clean. The area chalked as the place for the pet, or a cage as the case may be, must be kept clean at all times. You will be expected to do it every day if the customers leave on any trip and ask you to take care of the pet.

7. Walking as many pets as the customer owns. Since many customers rear more than one pet, and may not have sufficient number of leashes, it helps to carry your own kit that contains leashes. You may want to confirm the number of pets as well as availability of leashes with the customer before you arrive on the first day.

8. The most important job is to make the pet comfortable. This should be your priority. The owner's absence should not make him feel bad. A reasonable degree of observation of the pet's behavior can tell you about the pet's feelings. You should be able to judge his expression to know if he feels comfortable. You have to know how to differentiate between an angrily barking dog and an excitedly barking dog.

Train Your Dog To Be Happy While You Are At Work

By David Hamilton

Dog training can sometimes be difficult. Dogs are naturally playful and will often want to play when dog owners attempt to train them. It also takes them a while to register commands from their owner. The tips in this article will help you to successfully train your dog.

Always use your dog's name when issuing commands. When training your dog, it is important to be able to get and maintain their attention. Using your dog's name when giving a command will make them focus. Use your dog's name often. Get them used to both hearing and responding to it.

Research how to show your dog leadership in a way that a dog understands. Dogs are not humans, and do not think as humans do. Not knowing the proper way to teach leadership to a dog, allows him to assume he is your leader. If you confuse the dog, it may stress him and cause him to act out in negative ways such as barking incessantly, biting, or tearing up your property.

Be aware of your body language when you are with your dog. Animals are keenly aware of it, and pay more attention to your actions than they do your words. Make sure that you are sending the intended messages of authority and unconditional love to your dog at all times.

Do not train your dog through fear of physical punishment. Teaching your dog to respect your commands and dominance will create a healthy and stable pet. Dogs learn to respect the pack leader in the wild by being dominated, not attacked. Physical punishment can lead to an irrational and often violent pet.

Remember to give praise for good behavior. If your dog is doing what you want him to do, praise him. Don't make the mistake of only giving your dog attention when he is misbehaving. When you do that, you are training your dog to misbehave. Dogs like attention, and negative attention is better than no attention at all.

Do not push your dog to eat things he does not love thinking it will train him to enjoy the food over time. The treat or dog food bag may say that all dogs love the food the bag contains, but the truth is that dogs are very selective about their food. Experimenting to find food and treats that your dog loves goes a long way toward your dog's overall happiness.

As we have discussed in this article, owning a happy, healthy, and well adjusted dog is not an impossible dream. Training your pet, offering him plenty of love and attention, and being mindful of your dogs needs are key. Follow the steps listed above and your dog will become, and remain, an important part of your family.

Clever dogs may realize that the activity of punishment comes from you so you want to move it away from you. It's got to be able to associate the insignificant warning to the collar or the fence and not to the tutor.

You need to check the instructions. Read these fastidiously and understand what it suggests. It is certainly simple to utilize maybe even without the instruction book. Yet, there is nothing wrong in following the directions before using the gizmo. This may help in causing agitation to your dog.

Things to watch out for Bark Collars

From another viewpoint, there are a few things to avoid pertaining to the collar.

Use shock devices along with the invisible fence. The invisible fence itself is a shock device so when you use the bark collars, it also creates a shock to your dog. This can only confuse your pet so the best alternative then is usually to use citronella or ultrasonic contraptions. Adjust the device to full force right away

Most anti-barking instruments have settings that you can select from. Adjusting it to full strength can cause exorbitant punishment of your dog immediately. You wouldn't want your dog to be afraid of barking after all. What we wish to achieve is do away with the exasperation and excessive barking. It's important to evaluate the situation so you can determine the most useful solution to this difficulty. Then, you can continue with any appropriate training program and use the most highly effective anti-barking tool in the market.

Considerations For Canine ACL Surgery

By Louisa Purpura

Ongoing stress and strain placed on the muscles or tissues with rigorous activity can result in significant injury. For canines, joint injury can occur in the form of a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament where the region becomes unstable and is associated with painful symptoms. In severe cases, most times the veterinarian will recommend canine ACL surgery in order to alleviate symptoms.

Where a twisting motion and increased pressure is placed on the ligament in the hind leg, it often results in a tear. The most common causes for such an injury include slips on a wet surface, being knocked by a car and sudden twisting movements. Dogs that are overweight or obese are at greater risk for such damage as additional weight and pressure is placed on these regions.

It is important to consult with your veterinarian should you detect the presence of this condition. Older dogs and specific breeds are also more susceptible to developing this injury where the tendon slowly deteriorates over time and eventually snaps. This type of damage usually occurs very suddenly.

Dogs presenting with this condition will become lame in the affected limb, which includes a hesitance to place pressure on the leg. A closer look at the joint may reveal swelling and the animal will experience pain. Even though many dogs may start using the limb with some rest, it will eventually become painful and lameness will persist.

The professional vet will engage in a number of strategies in order to determine whether this type of injury is in fact present. In cases where he or she cannot feel the the ton ligament, X-rays of the region will be requested and will further rule out degenerative diseases. Dog ligament surgery will be necessary where a ruptured ligament is confirmed.

TTA surgery is required in complex cases where the ligament has completely torn off the joint. It is most commonly noted in older dogs with recovery extending over a 2 week period and limited activity for the next 6 weeks. In such cases, the veterinarian will be able to advise on the ways to keep pets confined to assist in the healing process.

Pets are encouraged to engage in short periods of swimming as well as walks on a lead for the support of the tissues. Where canine ACL surgery is invasive, it is necessary in order to address the severe nature of the damage. Where your pet shows a significant number of symptoms, it is necessary to consult with a veterinarian for the relief of pain and methods for recovery.

Securing Your Dog by Using Dog Fencing

By Colin Seal

The main point of the dog fence is to guarantee containment for this household pet. The unsubstantial obstruction can be an underground electric or wireless fence. Dog Fence will be accountable for keeping the dog safe in the house or just playing in your yard. More than that, it is expected to play a very important part in dog training. It will provide aid in the formation of your dog's behaviour.

Concepts in Canine Training

If you've just bought a new dog or puppy, make sure that it does not let him jump the fence. For all you know, jumping over the fence is a self-rewarding behavior.

What is the reason behind this?

The newly-escaped dog takes a sense of liberty and hopes to find another master which will give it favoured attention.

The experience of prancing and playing around without ant controls will appear natural to the dog. It gives the animal a lot of delight doing this.

When you install the dog fence, you do not have to stop at coaching your pet and understanding how to make use of the fence as a form of containment.

Think about your dog's driving force for jumping fences. Usually the dog jumps because of the following reasons:

- It sees another animal, person or object that it wants to chase.
- The dog sees a pleasant person or dog it wants to meet. This is logical since dogs always want to find companions.
- The dog is bored and looking for something to do, or hunting for its gurus.

Alone in the Yard

It can be frightful to leave the dog alone in the yard. It might be disparaged by other kids or provoked by other dogs. Your pet might learn to link the yard with stress, apprehension or lonesomeness.

Take this allow for consideration when installing the dog fence.

Simultaneously, you need to realize the dog which has purchased bad manners is not such a terrible dog after all.

You simply need to give it correct coaching and directions.

In like demeanour, it doesn't mean the dog that jumps over the fence has unusual manners.

The point of the lesson is if possible; watch over your dog it is in the yard. You can leave the dog alone after you've finished the training session but be with your pet when your time allows.

Punishment is a giant no-no. Use positive reinforcement by all possible means!

By Specific Testing Of Australian Shepherds Breeders Can Offer Healthy Pups

By John Robbins

Australian shepherds are renowned for their energy and ability to herd sheep and cattle. Although popular, they are not suited to every home. If you want to buy Australian shepherds breeders will be keen to help you choose a suitable dog. They are used for guide and therapy work, detection and search and rescue. They do wonderfully well at obedience and agility. Fly-ball is another option for this energetic breed.

You should buy a new shepherd only from a trustworthy breeder. Most breeds are subject to a few inherited problems. A reputable breeder will have had his breeding dogs tested for an array of conditions. It is only by testing potential stud animals and breeding from the healthiest that the breed can overcome genetic problems.

This breed may be a solid red or black color or may be merled. Merled dogs have irregular dark streaks or patches on a lighter colored background. For instance, blue merles have black patches on a blue-grey background. The eyes may be brown or blue. One eye might be blue and the other brown or an eye might be half-blue and half-brown. The two colors are sometimes 'merled', appearing in a swirled pattern in the one eye.

Problems occur when two dogs are mated which both carry a gene for the merle coloring. A quarter of the pups from a mating of two merle colored dogs will be affected by deafness, blindness or both. Those most badly affected are usually euthanized. If the affliction is not too pronounced, the dog may be sold on to an unsuspecting person. Some of these find themselves in shelters when their care becomes too difficult for their owners.

Another distinctive feature is the bobbed tail which occurs naturally in many of the breed. Others have shorter than normal tails or full length tails. The progeny of bobtail dogs sometimes don't have an anus. If not naturally bob-tailed the animal is often docked.

Other conditions which affect the breed are epilepsy, and respiratory and skin disorders. Problems with vision are caused by progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), iris coloboma, hereditary cataracts, conjunctivitis and red eye. There are DNA tests which can detect cataracts, MDR1 mutation and CEA (Collie Eye Anomaly). Dogs which carry the MDR1 mutation can suffer a massive reaction to administered anti-parasitic drugs.

It is possible to test dogs for a number of these conditions. Hip and elbow dysplasia, luxating patellas and congenital heart conditions can be detected by specific tests. Many dogs live very healthy lives. By testing Australian shepherds breeders can be reassured that their pups can be sold as healthy.

Tips On How To Effectively Train Your Dog

By David Hamilton

A lot of people want to train their dogs but they think it's too difficult. This is probably because they don't know how to properly train their dogs. The key to training dogs is that you have to expand your knowledge on methods and ways you can train your dogs to know how to properly train them. Read through this article to learn many helpful training strategies and ideas.

When communicating with your dog your tone of voice is important. While training your dog it is important that your voice projects confidence. Your dog needs to know that you are the leader in his life. Always speak clearly and enunciate while teaching the command. Let your dog know it if they were successful by using a cheerful tone to praise them. On the other hand, you will have to use a sharp tone if your dog is misbehaving.

When your dog does not do what you want, tell him "No!" then redirect him. Be patient and calm. Your dog wants to please you, but sometimes dogs just don't understand what is expected of them. Never hit or yell at your dog. If you yell and hit, your dog will just think you are out of control. You want your dog to trust you and respect you as the pack leader, so stay calm and consistent.

To help you train your dog so it is obedient and well behaved, it is important to show the dog that you, and you only, are the pack leader. This means showing a dominant presence so the dog understands that he is not the leader and he must follow your commands. If you follow this key step, you will be on your way to training your dog effectively.

All dogs need daily exercise and it can be an important part of your training efforts. Daily exercise shows your dog that he is a member of the family, as well as letting him know you are a strong leader. Exercise encourages his confidence and provides you with wonderful bonding opportunities.

Babying your dog does not produce productive relationships. Dogs enjoy having a pack of family members to trust, and even more, dogs enjoy having a job. Even the smallest dogs can perform tasks, so appeal to your dog's independent side by giving him something to work on! Fido will still love you at the end of the work-day.

When it comes to barking, be aware of the environment or activities when your dog barks excessively. Having an awareness of the triggers, can help you address the behavior constructively. For example, if your dog only barks excessively when visitors enter your home, enlist a friend to come over to help you address the behavior, at the time of the trigger event.

As you begin working with your dog on their training program, make sure to pay close attention to their diet. Much like humans, a dog gets their fuel from what they eat each day. Having a diet that is not nutritionally sound can affect a dog's behavior and make training more difficult.

Use timing as part of your dog training methods. Use it as a form of communication with your dog. Timing is one of the main elements of teaching a canine properly. It doesn't matter what teaching methods you use, try to work at having them develop the proper timing for each method.

In conclusion, training your puppy requires that you take a completely different approach than training an older dog. Luckily, you are starting off when it is easiest to do so. As long as you follow the tips provided, you should be able to train your dog successfully and form a great relationship between the two of you.

However , let me make it clear that the newly-escaped dog takes a feeling of liberty and intends to find another master that may give it favoured attention.

The experience of running and playing around without any controls will seem natural to the dog. It gives the animal a large amount of pleasure doing this thing.

Innovative Ideas When Running Pastured Poultry

By Juliette Cruz

Pastured poultry is an ideal way to produce succulent broilers and delicious eggs. With this method, chickens are kept in pens called chicken tractors. This method of husbandry is a compromise between cage or barn birds and free-range chickens. Raising poultry on pasture is gaining popularity as new innovations make the process easier.

Pastured poultry spend their time in chicken tractors which provide them with good shelter but also give them access to pasture or grass. The tractor, and the chickens, is moved onto fresh grass on a regular basis. As part of managed intensive grazing, the method works very well. Because of difficulties with providing adequate shelter, keeping chickens on pasture is not so popular with large numbers of birds. Customers are convinced this method of raising chickens results in tastier, more tender meat. Because of the continual supply of green feed, the chickens lay eggs with bright, golden yellow yolks.

There are dozens of innovative ways to make up suitable tractors. Much depends on the climate in your area. Many are made from scrap materials. Some chicken farmers use welded electrical conduit which is very lightweight. Or the entire frame can be made of PVC pipe which is lighter but of comparable cost to wood. You might want to use UV-stabilized PVC as it can become brittle after a few seasons of very cold weather.

Timber is often used in the construction of tractors. Use lightweight timber. Corrugated metal roofs are common. You may want to consider lightweight steel or aluminium for the roof. Iron roofs in full sun will need some sort of cooling. Painting the iron white with special reflective paint will help. Adding a second roof of cloth over the first is another solution. Leave a space between the two to encourage air flow.

Moving the pens is sometimes difficult, especially if pens are heavy. Skids or wheels can be fitted to make moving easier. By having PVC as the lower rails, the tractor will bounce over grassy bumps much easier.

Some tractors have axles fitted to each corner. When it is time to reposition the tractor, it can be moved in whichever direction is required. If feed and water containers are hung from the top rail, there will be no need to remove them every time the tractor is repositioned.

While smaller tractors are easier to move, they are more work if you have a lot of birds. An allowance of ten square feet per bird is acceptable. Chickens, particularly broilers, do not cope well with high temperatures and high humidity. Improve cooling by covering cage roofs with additional cheap bed-sheeting to reflect some of the heat. Soaker hoses laid on the roof act as evaporative coolers.

Tarpaulin or canvas is another option for the roof. These can be furled up when the weather is hot. Make a peaked roof if you intend to use these materials. Provide extra ventilation by covering the triangles under the peak with netting. Raise the back of the tractor a few inches to provide extra air flow. With a little thought and innovation, caring for pastured poultry will be a pleasure.

The Assumptions About Bulldog Jumping

By Lainey Lucius

When a puppy is still young and playful as it jumps on someone, most times it is usually harmless and fun. Yet, this is not usually the case when the dog is much older and way heavier. As a matter of fact, a large number of people would perceive a bulldog jumping as wanting to attack them when in real sense the dog is probably just playing. In this respect there are a few guidelines on how to prevent your dog from jumping as it may be disastrous.

When the bulldog is still a puppy, jumping may pose a threat to its health as the joints are not yet fully developed. It is a well-known fact that bulldogs can also jump quite high so all measures should be taken to ensure that the dog is less fond of jumping at everything. Old habits die hard so this should be carried out when the dog is still very young.

Also, the adoption of a few strategies has proved to be particularly helpful in getting rid of this behavior. An owner can use a reward based strategy to reward the dog when it gets used to staying on the ground. For instance, whenever the dog jumps on someone, the owner can condemn such behavior and offer rewards whenever the dog responds with all fours on the ground.

When discouraging the dog to jump, a number of facts should be kept in mind so as to monitor the dog抯 behavior before taking any appropriate action. Essentially, this is because the dog may soon begin to perceive someone as being mean and react by jumping with aggression. The trick is to use positive methods.

Additionally, an important step would be to use a sit command. Therefore the dog should be encouraged to sit near someone when it is excited as opposed to jumping. Likewise, this should be enforced using positive methods such as rewards.

Bulldog owners have the responsibility of ensuring that boundaries are set on where the dog can and cannot jump. The ideal way to do this to prevent the dog from jumping, say over a fence. This can be done by a simple stop command and after a number of tries the dog will be able to understand.

Dogs have a very short attention span therefore the best thing to do would be to use short training sessions. Consistency as well as practice is also essential to the whole learning process. Once one keeps using the same commands over and over again, the dog will grasp every command without a struggle.

Cat Grooming Services And Tips

By Nestor Chiasson

Grooming a feline is not easy, and only a handful are persistent enough to do the job. Several top dog groomers won't even allow cat grooming because of the possibility of harming themselves as well as the animal. A large number of cats despise water, and bathing can be a life and death situation for them. As a result, they become threatened and will react with hostility. A seasoned pet groomer should be able to calm the cat and give protection to both of them while doing so.

Pet grooming techniques are designed to keep the animal safe and give it confidence in the person doing the bathing. A good cat groomer will use the necessary gloves and other equipment to make bathing a more pleasant experience for the feline.

The most difficult job for the pet groomer is to cut mats off long haired cats. Breeds such as Persians and Blue Hairs are notorious for having big mats that are several inches in diameter and are tightly packed against the skin. Grooming these types of animals needs to be particularly thorough. Having no hair for these types of cats opens them up for infection and disease. Serious skin infections can result, which is costly in both time and money. As with other animals having the hair shaved off completely and living in an outside environment, it can lead to deadly skin diseases.

Choosing a cat groomer is important for the owner. In distant places, a pet grooming professional might not be available. The cat owner has to be willing to transport the cat to the nearest groomer, leave them for a night and pay visit the following day. Prior to leaving the feline, check it and ensure that you find no severe injuries or cuts. Run your fingers over the cat's fur in order that all mats are removed correctly.

Once satisfied with the pet grooming service, tip the groomer as a sign of appreciation. To make certain that you don't go back in a short time, you should brush your cat everyday and cut the ugly mats as they show up.
