Becoming A Ragdoll Breeder Requires Some Thought

By Caroline Wheeler

Ragdoll cats make wonderful pets. They are calm, like to play, and are great animals for indoors. Think about this breed if you live in a small condo or apartment. Ragdolls are also easy to care for and shed very little. If you want to become more involved in the breed, you might want to think about becoming a Ragdoll breeder.

Be realistic about breeding an animal. You truly have to love the task. Any thoughts of grandeur or making tons of money have to put aside. Look at breeding as a hobby; you will spend many hours and extra money just like any hobby. The outcome, advancing the breed, is the reward.

It would be a good idea to talk to a person who has been a breeder for a few years. This way you can get a real understanding of what breeding is about. Then you can talk to your family to see if this lifestyle will be acceptable to the family unit.

When choosing to be a breeder you will have to be good with cats and with people. Expect to have people you do not know in your house on a regular basis after each litter is born. There will be lookers, some will be serious, some not. They will be of all types of personalities and demeanors.

You will need to hone your interview skills to be able to place your feline babies with the right person in the right environment. It will be as if you have newborns when a new litter has arrived. Problems will arise and will need to be handled no matter what your schedule. You will have to find a cat sitter if you will be out of town for more than a day.

When you are a breeder, each birth requires your responsibility to the line. Based on your knowledge and work you want to advance the temperament and traits that are true to the breed. Occasionally you will have to retire a cat because the litters are not meeting or improving the line. Some really tough decisions will have to be made.

It is important that every breeder shows his or her cats on a regular basis. This is when you can compare what you have been doing with others. If you don't place in events, then you need to find out how to improve. It isn't necessary to win the best in show, but you do need to receive recognition to keep your practice on track.

It is a good practice to keep the kittens until they can be neutered or spayed. This will prohibit new owners from playing breeder for a quick buck. It also protects the line from inbreeding. Protect your investment and the breed and prevent unwanted pregnancies.

Search the web for Ragdoll breeders to get more information. If you still want to be a breeder after getting honest descriptions of what your life will be like, then consider getting a mentor. They will be able to short cut many mistakes for you and make your life somewhat easier.
