A Comprehensive Approach To Flea Treatment

By Peter J Medcalf

Dog and cat lovers world-wide want to protect their pets from the parasitic menace known as the flea. Advances in flea treatment products make this easier than ever. Many people address the issue in the warmer months but year round attention is the key to preventing an infestation as a heated home is a safe haven for the parasite in cold weather.

Fleas can make a pet's life miserable. The constant scratching and biting can cause hair loss and inflammation. Left untreated the infestation can lead to skin infections and a condition called flea anemia. Understanding the life cycle of the insect will go a long way in fighting the battle.

It is only the adult flea that lives on your dog. Female fleas will lay eggs on your pet which will then drop off into the local surroundings. This will typically be your home, in the carpet, pet bedding or sofa, anywhere that your dog spends its time. Adult fleas will only live for 7 to 14 days and are replaced by new fleas. The adult flea relies on sucking blood from your pet for nutrition to keep it alive.

It is very important to develop a comprehensive approach in flea control. This will involve not only treating your beloved pet but the environment in which it lives too. Treatments for your dog come in many forms such as powders, shampoos, collars, sprays as well as "spot-on" medicine. Attention to detail is required vacuuming your home to ensure you don't miss those hard to reach areas. Particular attention should be paid to your pet's bedding, skirting boards and sofa cushions.

Pest control is possible with the right products and their routine application. Research the methods and commit to the plan. Veterinarians are an excellent source of information for prescription options. Online searches will result in choices of which the pet owner might be unaware. A happy, healthy pet is its own reward and worth the effort it takes to maintain a parasite free home.

A responsible pet owner is a loving pet owner. A little due diligence with a commitment to continued treatment will keep the animal and the home environment pest free.
