The Best Advantages Of Owning Small Dog Breeds

By Mike Hienstat

Owning a dog is one of the most fulfilling and enjoyable experiences in life. Unfortunately many people miss out on this experience thinking that they don't have the time or the space to responsibly take care of one when in reality nothing could be further from the truth. Here are the top five advantages to owning a small dog breed, that will make just about anyone realize just how easy it can be.

One of the most convenient advantages of owning a little dog is that you can do so even if you are currently living in small space such as an apartment. While larger pooches usually require a much more spacious area, the majority of small dog breeds couldn't be happier living in apartments and condos. Fortunately this allows a huge percentage of dog lovers to be able to own pets in situations where they normally would not be able to.

When choosing a pup you do have a very wide array to pick from. It doesn't matter if you prefer breeds with curly tails, pointy ears, an excess of wrinkles, or just small white dog breeds, there is something for you. Since every breed does have traits that they are known for in both their appearance and personality it makes weeding out the ones that don't work for you very easy.

In regards to exercise, you shouldn't think that you'll need to go jogging or running with your pet for at least an hour or two per day like with their larger cousins. Every breed and even dog has its own energy level and exercise requirements. However even with some of the most high energy popular small dog breeds, like Jack Russel Terriers for example some time spent playing and walking around the block with your pooch will keep them happy and healthy.

Taking care of a canine can be expensive. Between food, supplies, toys and vet bills the cost can add up quickly. But for small sized dog breeds the expenses are almost always way less because everything they need is in a much tinier quantity, particularly food but also when it comes to pricey medicines and vaccinations.

An excellent trait that many owners don't even consider, is that little pooches can be extremely good watchdogs. They most likely aren't going to be able to stop an intruder but they may be able to deter them with their barking and alert you to their presence. Many breeds in the terrier group are especially well-known for this characteristic.

As you can see there are a ton of benefits to owning a petite canine, so don't automatically assume you don't have the resources to take care of one. With so many small dog breeds to choose from, you will be sure to find yourself a furry little friend that makes your life complete.
