Egyptian Mau cats are some of the oldest breeds of cats in existence today. There are speculations that they date back to ancient Egypt, but there is no tangible proof yet. These cats have been domesticated for a very long time, but they still retain many characteristics from their ancestors. The breed has a spotted coat that may assume one or several colors. Most of them have coats that are bronze, pale silver, or silver in color. The eyes are large and have gooseberry-green color. The ears may be medium-sized of large in size while the head is usually shaped like a wedge. They are generally masculine cats, with a great physical shape and appearance.

They also have longer hind legs as compared to the front legs and this makes them to seem to be standing on tips of toes. Their tails are medium in length with quite thick bases. They have a remarkable speed compared to all domesticated cats and this is due to the flank of muscles present on the hind legs.

The parts of the body that are colored smoke usually have medium-sized silky, fine textured coat. On the other hand, parts with bronze and silver color have dense and resilient texture. The spots on the body are placed randomly and vary a lot in size, ranging from small to large. The spots also assume different shapes. The tails end with a dark tip as one of the distinctive features.

Apart from the smoke, bronze and silver colored spots, there are some cats with blue silver, blue smoke, solid black, solid blue and blue spots. However these cats with the additional colors are not allowed to participate in cat shows. They are commonly found in homes as pets and they possess the traits of the Egyptian Mau

The cats should have proper care. This includes combing their coats on weekly basis. An individual has to aim on removing the dead hair from the coat. This should happen during combing of the hair. The teeth should be brushed. This is because of the periodontal diseases that can be caused when the teeth of the cats are not brushed. It is recommendable for the teeth to be brushed on daily basis. Trimming of the nails is also a necessity.

The eyes need to be wiped with a clean piece of cloth to remove dirt. When cleaning the eyes, a separate area of the piece of cloth should be used on each eye. This is meant to prevent the possibility of spreading infections from one eye to the other. The ears should also be cleaned on a weekly basis using a soft piece of cloth.

When cleaning the ears, the water used should be warm. Cider vinegar should also be added to the warm water to increase its efficiency. Cotton swabs should not be used to clean the ears because they cause damage. The litter box used by the cats should be kept clean at all times.
