Things To Know About Cavachons For Adoption

By Catherine Cook

Appearance is the number one thing most people are drawn to when looking for a dog to adopt, although many others factors should also be considered. They should also take into account the breed's general behavioral traits and health needs. When thinking about Cavachons for adoption, it would be beneficial to know as much about this type of dog as possible to make sure they are suitable for one's current living conditions.

Perhaps the first thing interested persons should realize is that these dogs will not be eligible for showing in AKC sponsored events. This is because the Cavachon is considered to be a designer breed - which means that is the result of the crossing of two different pure breeds. These dogs were created with the intention of combining the most desirable traits found in the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Bichon Frise.

This breed is rather difficult to obtain and can be quite a substantial investment. As most of these dogs are first generation - meaning that they are directly descended from one of each of the parent breeds - people are often required to sit on waiting list for long periods of time. While it is possible to get second generation litters, the quality of such offspring is often degraded.

This breed is small and categorized as Toy. At their maturity point, they are generally no larger than 13 inches high and usually weigh somewhere between 12 and 18 pounds. They are the ideal size for anyone who may live in a confined space or apartment.

The highest quality pups are going to exhibit the most desirable characteristics shared by both parent breeds. This most commonly means having soft and silky fur, a shorter snout, and extremely expressive large eyes. They are most desired because of their very adorable appearance.

Potential owners should also be aware of the fact that these dogs will require a substantial amount of grooming. Although their fur is considered hypoallergenic because they are low shed, it does grow quite fast and can become easily matted and dirty. They will require frequent brushing and regular trimming in order to remain neat and tidy.

Those who are interested in adopting a Cavachon should also understand that the pup will require a lot of time and regular exercise. These dogs are really quick learners and are typically very well behaved, but they become very attached to their humans and when separated, can experience a great deal of anxiety. They should be socialized while still very young, and obedience training is best to begin as early as possible and then regularly and consistently reinforced.

Because there is no official list of reputable Cavachon breeders, one is going to need to do their own research and be very cautious when selecting the provider of their puppy. Speaking with others who have chosen to own this breed will provide valuable feedback on reliable facilities from which to choose. Since this is a big investment, taking the time to find out information such as breeder experience and animal treatment, is highly recommended.
