The Nigerian dwarf goat has its origin in West African region. It is a miniature breed of goats. Even though this breed has its origin in West Africa, it is currently spread all over the world. The second height standard is maintained by the Nigerian Dwarf Goat Association, which requires the does to be between 43 and 48 centimeters tall. The maximum height for the does is supposed to be 53 centimeters.

Bucks in the second standard require to have heights ranging from 0.48 to 0.53 meters and should not exceed 0.58 meters. These goats exist in many different colors. Gold, white, black, cream, and red are among the colors that commonly exist. Besides solid colors, their coats can also be patterned in different ways. Some of the patterns include brown and white spots and brown and black spots.

Naturally, these goat has horns that grow to variable lengths. However, most breeders prefer to disbud them while still young. Most breeders have the horns removed at the age of 2 weeks. The removal of horns is meant to improve safety for the goat itself, human caregivers, and herd mates. Some of these animals are blue-eyed. Having blue eyes is a dominant trait in goats.

Nigerian dwarf goat yields a lot of milk even though it is a dwarf breed. They produce between 1 and 8 pounds of milk each day. An average goat yields one kilogram of milk in a single day. The type and quality of the feed, general food management and the number of times the goat has given birth all determine the amount of milk produced.

One can manage their flock in a way that they have a constant supply of milk the whole year round. This is made possible by the fact that these animals are capable of breeding the whole year round. That means that the does can become receptive at any time of the year. The content of butterfat in the milk produced by these goats is higher in comparison to milk from other bigger breeds.

These animals are gentle and intelligent in terms of their temperament. Their gentleness when combined with their small sizes and colorful coats makes them good pets to keep. Feeding the kids using bottles helps to make them bond more with people.
