By Angela Sanders

The Italian Greyhound is a breed of dogs that is categorized among greyhounds. It is the smallest member of the greyhound category, with the acronym IG often used to refer to them. Although IG has a delicate appearance, it is an ancient breed that has been around for the last two millennia. It has the attentiveness of a lapdog, but the complexity of ancient hounds. Here are facts regarding Italian greyhound breeders.

The height of a typical IG from the ground to the shoulders is 13 to 15 inches. These dogs have long legs with fine bones. Given that they are coursing hounds, they have leek, curving lines that are characteristic in coursing dogs. These dogs are loving and entertainment companions hence they have been bred for so long. In most cases, they prefer staying on the bed or lap as opposed to the floor.

Unlike common breeds like Pomeranians, Italian greyhound is a rare breed. As such, finding a suitable breeder from whom one can buy the dog is a bit of a hassle. However, the process has been made simple by the availability of professional associations and clubs such as the AKC. These associations can provide assistance in locating a suitable breeder. One can request for referrals from the AKC.

Besides going through the AKC, one can also ask any person they see with a good IG where they bought it from. The buying process is the hardest because it is very easy to come across unethical breeders who only focus on making money rather than the quality of the stock they produce. The breeding industry is quite lucrative that it has attracting many people, even those with no prior experience in breeding.

In case one has intention to have a puppy which the will use to breed other IGs later on, it is vital that they get one from a respectable breeder. Reputable breeders are concerned with the quality of puppies they produce and provide all that is needed to achieve good healthy puppies. A buyer should be sure that their pet is free of diseases and other undesirable effects characteristic in low-quality puppies.

A puppy obtained for companionship should be spayed or neutered when it attains a certain age. Information on the right time to do the spaying or neutering should be provided by the breeder. In other cases, one can buy a puppy that is already spayed or neutered. Such puppies give one an easier time owning them.

Given that IG is not quite common, not many people know about them. That is why the breeder should be able to provide information regarding best practices for caring, socializing, feeding, and treating the hound among many other aspects. Some breeding experts provide these information in the form of pamphlets or recommended reading sources on the internet.

A number of people have specialized in breeding IGs. Some expert breeders go to an extent of showcasing their work in shows. This earns them huge amounts of money every year. Puppies of this breed are slightly expensive than other common breeds because of their rarity. Many people will stop to look at the dog when they are being walked on the streets. One should prepare to see this happen a lot.
