Saluki Dog Is One Of The Oldest Breeds

By Helene Norris

Beautiful and graceful, Saluki dog is probably the oldest living dog breed. This slim and elegant dog is an excellent hunter and can run extremely fast and long without fatigue. Maybe he is happy to lie by your side for hours, but he expect you to give him an opportunity to run freely for at lest 40 minutes every single day.

Bred for hunting gazelles, rabbits and similar animals, and had access to the places where other dog breeds were not appreciated, such as the Egyptian court and Bedouin tent. Males can grow up to 28 inches in height, and up to 65 pounds. Females are smaller, somewhere between 35 and 45 pounds, and up to 24 inches high. They live ten to fifteen years in average, if they eat well and train regularly, but it also depends on their genetic predispositions.

As with all other dogs, if you feed them too much, they will have shorter lives. With this breed, you probably won't have such problems, because he eats very little, and he is very picky when it comes to food. It is a slimy breed, and you'll have to live with that your dog looks a bit starved.

As all varieties are allowed, Saluki might be white, tan, cream, fawn, red or tricolor. Black or chocolate on tan are also common combinations, but all other colors on white background are also admitted. The hair has to be extremely soft and silky. Feathered type has long hair on its ears, tail and legs, and the length may vary. Smooth types have longer hair only on their ears.

This really is a very nice breed. It doesn't bark, snore or drool much, and it really has moderate grooming needs. It doesn't require too much attention, as long as you provide enough exercise on daily basis. Your dog will be happy to dig and run, but he will also be quite satisfied if left alone to sleep for hours. Although he isn't aggressive at all, he might be a very good watchdog, and he is very nice with children.

Saluki is a quiet and dignified dog, gentle and good-natured. Sometimes shy and distrustful of other people, but he is doing fine with other dogs. Sometimes it is stubborn and willful, and may not respond to your calls. If you do not have a fenced yard, do not let it unattended, because they are not afraid of cars.

This breed is probably the oldest one known to men. Although there are numerous variations in color, this breed is absolutely pure. Two basic variations are feathered and smooth. The first one is more common, and has smooth coats feathered on the area of ears, legs and tails. Smooth variant only has longer hair on their ears, but both variations have extremely silky and soft hair.

Saluki dog doesn't require too much attention and it is easy to groom it. It is enough to brush him once a day, to keep those feathered parts untangled. Although it might not look this way, this dog really can run. He is a real hunter. Although generally obedient, if he is on the chase, he won't hear your calls.
