Purchasing New Kitty Care & Supplies

By Robert Baker

If you're new to cats new kitty care & supplies may be a daunting subject. However, it is surprisingly easy to shop and care for a kitty. All you really need is a liter box, a scratching post, a couple of toys, food, and food and water bowls.

Many brands of cat food are available today, but not all of them are healthy. To quickly get a feel for the quality of a commercial cat food, simply check the ingredients. Make sure that the food does not contain any by-products. For example, if a food contains chicken the ingredients should show "chicken", not "chicken by-products".

It is important to switch food slowly, so ask what your cat is currently eating. Begin with a mix of seventy-five percent old food and twenty-five percent new food. In a few days, increase the ratio to fifty/fifty. A few days after that switch to twenty-five percent old food and seventy-five percent new food. The entire process should last a total of seven to ten days, and then the food can be switched completely.

The wide variety of liter boxes that are on the market today can be daunting to a new cat owner, but most cats are not picky about their liter box. Ask if your new cat has ever had problems with using the litter box. Deeper boxes are required for cats that dig excessively. So show your new cat where the box is, just place it inside.

Cats that have their claws will require a scratching post. A few toys will make almost any cat happier. Homemade toys work great. Some yarn with a knot on one end can be a great toy.

Shopping for new kitty care & supplies doesn't have to be complicated. Just follow these tips to get you started.
