Ragdoll Cats Are The Perfect Household Pet

By Jeanette Parsons

Ragdoll cats have captured the attention of cat lovers everywhere. Their beautiful coat, bright eyes, sweet temperament, playfulness and hearty health makes the breed the perfect addition to a family with children. This breed also gets along very well with other animals and can easily blend into a multi-pet household.

The history of this cat's origins is a topic of great debate. Ann Baker claims her pregnant cat was hit by a car in the 1960's and her liter came out with the trademark limp behaviors we see in the breed today. Her theory is that genetic experiments were preformed on the cat while in the vet's care. Scientist disagree saying this type of science did not exist in the 1960s.

There is a lot of debate on where this cat got its docile nature and tendency to go limp when picked up. Some theorize it is passed on from the Persian and Siamese breeds. Others claim it is a genetic mutation. Whatever the reason this cat is extremely easy going, affectionate and easy to handle. The negative side of this low key personality is their tendency not to try to defend themselves from harm, it makes them poorly suited for the outdoors.

Soft, rabbit soft fur is one of the favorite traits of this cat. Because of the lack of an undercoat its medium length fur will not mat like other long haired breeds. Beautiful blue yes are also a trademark thought to have come from its Siamese cat ancestors. This breed is large and sturdy weighing up to 20 lbs with markings on its ears, face (except for a white chin) and tail.

This breed is extremely playful but not hyperactive. They will happily chase a the around house but will not climb the curtains to chase a bug. Because of their docile personality and playfulness they are ideal for a household with children. They are also a very intelligent breed that is easy to train when a treat reward system is used.

The breed is overall an extremely healthy group. No trends for health issues have been reported overall and with good care a cat can live over twenty years. Though with every breeding line small issues can appear within them so it is best to ask the breeder about their particular line. They are also veracious eaters, they will not tolerate a skipped meal quietly.

The ability to get along with other pet, docile nature with children and ability to be trained set Ragdoll cats apart from other breeds. With proper care and an indoor lifestyle they will shower their owners with love for years to come. Read more about: ragdoll cats
