What vet care do guinea pigs need?

By Bailey May

Pet care is always very important to understand before choosing any animal for you, and your family. Although you may want an animal you have to think about it very carefully, and there are several different things to consider. You will want to ensure that you fully understand the level of commitment that you are entering into.

You will need to fully appreciate that to give any animal the correct pet care you will need time, effort, love, and patience. Animals are a full time commitment, and you need to consider your lifestyle, and why you want one. Choosing a pet is a serious decision, and if it is for your children you must choose wisely. Guinea pigs are excellent pets to have, and are often chosen for children due to their size, and temperament.

Guinea pigs are very friendly, and will rarely bite making them perfect for children to handle. Although they can be kept on their own they are very social creatures, and prefer to be in a group. Once you have decided on the perfect guinea pig for your home you need to consider all of the elements of the pet care needed.

Your new family member will need somewhere to live, sleep and run as well as the right bedding, food, and toys. If possible you should try and keep your guinea pig inside, and away from drafts, and predators. They will need a regular check up at the vet to ensure that they are healthy and happy, and that you are conducting the right level of pet care.

One of the biggest issues that guinea pigs have is a lack of vitamin C, which can cause their fur to fall out. You need to ensure that you fully understand the pet care and dietary needs of your new pet to ensure they have enough vitamins. Learning about the correct foods to feed the guineas pigs is essential, and you need to teach your children the right foods to give them.

They will eat anything, and this can be a problem if your children are feeding them processed foods, or too much fruit and vegetables. Although these are recommended you need to ensure that you feed them in the correct amounts. Too much rich food can cause your guinea pigs to get sick, and then they will need a trip to the vet. Your guinea pigs will also need their toe nails clipped as part of their monthly pet care regime. This can be done easily at the vet when they go for their checkup, and will ensure that they do not injure themselves, other guinea pigs, or you. If you are confident you can clip the toe nails yourself very easily, however, many people prefer the vet to do it.

Getting your guinea pigs used to be handled is essential, or they will be scared when picked up. The more that you handle them from a small age will ensure that they grow up to be friendly, and will love the attention. If you ensure that everyone knows the correct pet care for your animal they will love being part of your family.
