The History of the Aquarium

There are many historical aquariums; however, modern aquariums as we know them today began developing during the mid-1800s. The Sumerians kept fish they had caught in fish ponds until they were ready to fix them for supper.

There is a long and detailed history of Koi fish and Goldfish being bred more than 2,000 years ago in China. This was during the Song dynasty when they kept goldfish in large ceramic bowls. Many individuals use these decorative bowls today for container gardening, not knowing their original purpose.

There are ancient Egyptian pictures of fish kept in aquariums that were rectangular temple pools. This is something that is uniquely different and very interesting.

After WWI in the mid to late 1800s, keeping fish as a hobby became very popular. Sure, there were museum aquariums; however with the advancement of modern lighting and filtration, many individuals and families began keeping fish in their homes.

Keeping fish began taking root in modern culture as many companies came up with interesting and unique items to include in fish tanks. They also began searching for better means of keeping clean water and fish healthy.

We have such a vast assortment of aquarium options today because of these advancements in technology. There are many items from which you can choose, while creating your very own unique and interesting fish tank set up. Keeping fish in a tank is so much fun at home!

Big Ol' Aquarium

The Osaka Aquarium, in Japan is the most expressive and impressive of all live fish aquariums in the world today. It is magnificent with its 5,400 cubic meters of volume filled with better than 580 fish species. Truly, it is a charming delight to behold.

Ever wonder if there's actually a benefit to having an aquarium?

Since the 1980s, there are studies showing that keeping an aquarium aids in providing you with relaxation and health improvement.

For instance, seniors who have a home freshwater fish aquarium show a drop in high blood pressure. Hyperactive children seem to calm down while gazing into a fish tank. However, this is not all.

Dental patients who watched fish in the office need less pain medication then patients who just sat in a waiting room, and it's shown that fish in a tank, verses a nicely decorated tank, make a bigger difference.

Surprised? Many people aren't. Hey, just consider this - many doctor's offices, waiting rooms, dental clinics, and even children's hospital wings have an aquarium filled with colorful fish.

Studies have been done that also show that Alzheimer's patients react extremely well to an aquarium being in the dining area. They eat more, need less supplements, and even are less aggressive.

Interestingly, even viewing a video recording of fish is relaxing.

It doesn't matter if you've got a big aquarium or a little aquarium - you can still reap the benefits of having the fish in your house, and they're wonderful pets to boot.
