Why Obedience Training Is Essential

By Garrett McMahan

Dogs truly are some of the best friends we can ever have as they are loyal, caring animals that love being with their human companions. Of course, while the benefits of dog ownership are many, every owner also commits to following through on a variety of responsibilities when they adopt or purchase a dog. Proper training is one highly important task owners need to consider.

Sadly, hundreds of thousands of dogs in the U.S. end up in shelters precisely because they were never trained properly. With a little patientience and work, almost all dogs can be taught to behave and to stop exhibiting most types of troublesome behavior. To maximize your enjoyment of your pet, obedience training is a necessary step that will eliminate a host of problems and irritating behavior.

Proper training for obedience includes teaching your dog simple skills such as to stay and sit and lie down on command. Walking your dog also is a lot more pleasant once they have been trained how to walk properly while leashed. You can train your dog to stay quiet or to keep away from furniture and to keep them from jumping on all of your houseguests. These are just a few issues that can be addressed during training.

Not only is a well-trained dog easier to deal with, a trained dog is much safer in general. So often dogs dash out into the street or run away from owners only to be injured or killed by a car or even encounter a wild animal. What happens if your dog runs away and jumps on someone and they are injured or they get into a skirmish with another dog? These are all possibilities if your dog is untrained, so to ensure their safety, training is the way to go.

Another huge benefit of training is that it cements the bond between the two of you. After all, dogs love spending time with their owners and training involves a lot of patience and praise, which makes your dog more comfortable with you. You also begin to truly understand the dog's personality which affects the way you interact. Your dog will work hard to please you and once he or she is well trained, they will be a companion that you can take to many places that an untrained dog would be unwelcome. The more time you can spend together, the stronger your bond will be.

There are many training programs out there to consider, but a DVD dog training program is a great idea because you can train on a schedule that is convenient to you. The Dog's Way is a well-designed dog training program that addresses a host of basic skills that every dog needs to learn in 12 easy-to-follow lessons. In addition to the DVD lessons, there is a helpful workbook and special reminder cards that are great for on-the-go training. So no matter where you are, you can be consistent with training. In addition, those who purchase the DVDs have access to a student-only website with additional tips and techniques.
