Find Jack Russell Breeders In California

By Karina Frost

If you live in an apartment, but prefer strong and active, playful dogs, this might be a perfect pet for you. There are several Jack Russell breeders in California who breed high quality dog lines. You will find more info, as well as adorable pictures of their available puppies on their web pages. But first, here are some things you might want to know about this lovely little breed.

The Jack Russell Terrier is keen minded, active and fearless little dog. Although they all share the same origin, three different types are recognized. Irish and English type belong to the same breed, although Irish type has shorter legs. American type has longer legs and today it is recognized as a separate breed. This breed is called Parson Russell terrier.

Jack Russell terriers have to have at least fifty one percent of white hair, combined with brown, tan and black markings. Although there are some other variations, for example white with brindle markings, they are really rare. The hair is short and easy to groom. A good brushing will do. Show dogs require special attention and coat strip done by professional groomer.

These beautiful and playful, strong little dogs grow up to fifteen inches and weigh anywhere between fourteen and eighteen pounds. They can be prone to certain health problems, for example with their hip joints, or sometimes with their eyes and ears. Eye diseases are mostly inherited. There is also a possibility for mast cell tumors. Nevertheless, they are generally healthy and live at least fifteen years.

This dog needs to be active and requires long walks on regular basis. If you can take him for a walk at least once a day, preferably twice, he will be perfectly happy living in a small apartment. It would be much better to have a house with large backyard, of course. In any case, don't leave him at home alone if you can avoid it. If not, make sure to take him for a walk before you leave him there.

Your dog needs a strong pack leader, or he will try to become one. It is very important to make him understand that there are some limitations he has to respect. Thanks to his high intelligence, you will enjoy training this dog. He can learn all kinds of tricks. In any case, start training him very early and you will avoid the forming of so called small dog syndrome.

Terrier can be stubborn, obsessive barker and even aggressive if you don't train him well. This dog possesses enormous amount of energy to spend, and a mind of his own. He usually has very strong characters and needs a strong pack leader. If you aren't prepared for this, maybe you should choose another breed, more suitable for your living style.

Playful, fearless, highly trainable and alert, these lovely little creatures make perfect family dogs. They adore children and make great friends to them, always ready to play. Unlike some other breeds, they have especially strong hunter instinct. That's why you shouldn't trust them with other little animals you may have as pets, especially with cats.
