Tips To Find The Right E Collar Alternative

By Olivia Cross

The Elizabethan collar is a popular medical device for pets and is secured around the neck to minimize damage to surgical and injury sites. The aim is to prevent the animal from being able to reach specific areas including the head, body, and legs that may impact the healing process. An E collar alternative includes a range of products that can be used for pet wellness.

E Collars have been designed with a cone shape and is known as an Elizabethan collar. It consists of a hard plastic that fits around the neck of a dog to prevent it from being able to reach areas of damage that can lead to complications in the recovery process. Unfortunately not all pets may be accustomed to the contraption as it increases stress and anxiety leaving many owners having to look for alternatives.

Post operative sites and damages can become irritated and infected with constant licking and scratching and requires that pets are prevented from being able to reach the targeted regions. A common option is a neck brace that restricts normal range of movement and is softer in comparison to the large plastic cone. It can aid in protecting specific areas of the body, but pets may still be able to reach the head.

Injuries located close to the head and ears may be prevented with boots placed on the feet of canines. The aim is to cover the nails that cause the greatest amount of damage by scratching, but it cannot be used for injuries on the legs and body. These items should prove comfortable and not distress the pet to ensure that it remains on the feet.

Softer alternatives include a paper based collar that fits around the neck in a cone shape. The softer consistency of paper is suitable for a smaller dog that may be intimidated by the harder plastic shell of an E collar. It is not a good idea to use these items with larger more boisterous dogs because rolling on the item will simply destroy it.

Both cats and dogs can wear a foam based ring around the neck region that will protect from reaching the physical areas. The aim of such appliances is to minimize the ability for the animal to reach the targeted regions in a comfortable and simple manner. The soft foam consistency will provide the necessary protection without the large size of the plastic cone.

A popular option includes jackets that provide a secure fit around the body of cats and dogs to protect the affected region. The particular range is available in different sizes and can protect pets from the heightened levels of anxiety and stress that are often experienced. It can further prevent against dirt entering the wound sites and should be worn in the cooler months.

There are alternatives to the traditional E collar depending on the size of your pet and the location of damage. It is not possible to monitor pets to ensure that the wounds are protected from scratching and licking. All medical supports should be gradually introduced to pets through positive reinforcement.
