The name Balinese is not related in any way to the Indonesian island, Bali. The cat came up as a result of many interbreeding efforts between Siamese cats with the purpose of revealing the recessive long hair gene in Siamese. Initially, the breed was called long-haired Siamese, but the name was viewed as too long. Thus, it was changed to Balinese in reference to Balinese dancers. The evolution of the cat has led to two separate varieties based on physical type.

The coat of this cat is medium in length and should be soft and silky. However, there may be differences among individuals in the length of the coat. Pure cream and white are the colors for newly born kittens, which start to develop visible points in cold parts of the body. Darkening occurs in the face, tail, ears, and paws. By the age of four weeks, they have identifiable body color. Coat color darkens as the cat continues to age. Lighter coats have been observed in cats living in warmer areas while those in cold areas have darker coats.

Chocolate, blue, lilac, and seal are the four colors of this cat that are accepted by cat fanciers everywhere in the world. Those that have red, cream point, lynx point, and tortoiseshell coats are categorized differently as Javanese. The Indonesian island, Java has no relationship to the name Javanese.

Like its ancestor Siamese, this breed exhibits a high level of playfulness, intelligence, and sociability. It is usually interested in activities going on around it and prefers vocalizing in a lower voice. Among all breeds with long hair, this cat is considered to be the most intelligent.
