American Bulldog Breeders Oklahoma Natives Depend On When Choosing A Pet

By Stephanie Cooper

There are as many different kinds of dog lovers as there varieties of their canine companions. Many are fond of tiny dogs that love to cuddle and sit on their owners laps. Still others prefer large, sturdy animals that can serve as watchdogs and also join their owners in active lifestyles. American bulldog breeders Oklahoma natives turn to when they are thinking about purchasing such an animal want everyone to have basic information about this special breed.

If you are consulting an honest breeder, that person will tell you these animals are not for everybody. They are big and strong and have minds of their own. They can also be fun loving and enjoy human companionship. They are sometimes confused with Pit Bulls because they are similar in build and coloring. They are not Pit Bulls however. They are also not English Bulldogs. The Americans' British relatives are much shorter and stockier.

Americans were bred for violent sports many years ago, and some retain elements of aggression. Breeders should be able to give you a genetic analysis of the line your puppy comes from. What is still a characteristic of most of these animals is their instinctive dislike of cats. They are not compatible unless raised together, and even then you should be cautious. American Bulldogs are not fond of other dogs either. If you have two males in your household, you are probably going to have conflict.

Large, athletic dogs need room to run and play and let off steam. They will not do well in confined spaces like condos and apartments unless the owner has plenty of time to spend running and exercising them in the outdoors. Farms are excellent environments for the dogs. They will also do well in spacious homes with expansive areas for them to play.

Since these are large, strong animals, it is important to train them in the basics of good behavior. This is not always easy as they are also strong willed and stubborn. To get them to cooperate, you will need to give them lots of positive reinforcements like hugs and treats. You will also have to be consistent with them if you expect to get anywhere in your training. Once they have gotten away with something, you will have trouble going forward.

Grooming is a constant necessity for some pets, but not these short haired dogs. They need to be brushed occasionally to get rid of loose fur and washed if they have been playing in the mud. Bad breath can be an issue with bulldogs. You should get them used to a toothbrush at an early age so you won't have to struggle with them later on.

You should take your dog to the vet every year for wellness checkups. Although these bulldogs are generally healthy animals and may live up to fifteen years, they can be susceptible to certain diseases. Deafness, thyroid issues, bone cancer, and hip dysplasia are some of the concerns your vet should be on the lookout for.

Pets are usually beloved and special to their owners. Whether they are big or little, they have plenty of love to give and companionship to share.
