Goldendoodles are still a relatively new breed of poodle mixes. The crossbreeding between the Labrador retriever and poodles to produce the breed began in the 1990s. The initial goal of developing the breed was to attain a larger poodle that still had the low-shedding coat, intelligence, and low-dander traits that golden retriever had.

Since the breed is still fairly young, most puppies result from the crossbreeding of Labrador retrievers and poodles. That means that they are first generation offsprings. Groodles are rarely interbred at the moment. The young age of the breed also means that there is no registry or club for it yet. However, many internet communities exist for owners and lovers. The popularity of the breed is rising at a very high rate worldwide today.

Goldendoodles vary a lot in the size they achieve when they are fully matured. The lack of breed standards that need to be maintained when breeding is the main factor that contributes to the large variance in size. Another influential factor is the breeding of individuals is not from multigenerational breedings. Nonetheless, miniature, standard, and large are the three size categories of groodles currently available.

The miniature groodle is usually achieved by crossing toy poodles with golden retrievers. The height of the miniature ranges between 13 to 20 inches at the shoulders. The weight lies within the 15 to 35 pound bracket. Standards goldedoodles rise to a height of 17-20 inches and weight between 40-50 pounds. The large variety weighs 50-90 pounds and has a height of 20-24 inches.

The popularity of groodles has grown at a very high rate in comparison to that of other mixes of poodles. This is because the breed has an impeccable personality. Naturally, the dog is intelligent, friendly, and very accepting. They make good companions and are an excellent choice for a family pet. They enjoy human company if they are trained properly. When in high moods, they can be very playful and mischievous too.

The kind of temperament the dog turn out with in adulthood usually depend on heredity, training, and socialization among other factors. To prevent it from becoming mischievous, it should not be left alone for many hours. Human company is important to the temperament too. The breed coexists well with other pets, breed, and little kids. They have low-maintenance coats and need exercise only moderately.

Groodles are healthy in general. They have good health and life expectancy than the parents they are bred from. The genetic health problems they suffer from are those that affect both the poodle and golden retriever. Patella and elbow disorder, CHD, and PRA are the main minor concerns to watch for.
