Small Dog Breeds That Will Melt Your Heart

By Andrew Dooley

Bigger-sized canines are not everyone's cup of tea. They can cost an arm and a leg to feed and need a large area to run and play. Luckily there are however many other options to pick from that can work for you. Read on and you'll learn about five small dog breeds that could be what you're looking for.

A choice which is always close to the top on every small dog breeds list is the Bichon Frise. This breed is well-known for its playful nature and white colored coat. If you are looking for a pet that doesn't shed and is great with kids this could be it. Many owners who are allergic to other canines are able to tolerate living with this breed without a problem.

One of the most popular small dog breeds is the beagle. While they are little they are actually a hunting dog. Because they were bred for the field they have excellent noses and a loud bark. Even though they might not make the best choice for a small apartment they are a good fit for families with kids.

We are all familiar with the poodle, however a lot of people don't realize their is a pocket-sized version. Known as the toy poodle, this is one of the best small dog breeds when you want a smart pet that you can train without much effort. Yet, if you are considering one you will want to remember that its coat will need regular grooming.

Often times having a pooch which is adorable is of major importance. Having a wrinkled face that is reminiscent of a bulldog, the pug is extra cute. The fact that they have a low energy level means they are a smart way to go for the elderly or very busy people who don't have too much time for exercise. Very small apartments will do just fine for this breed.

For those who are looking for a pint-sized pooch that can keep up with their active lifestyle there is the Jack Russell terrier. While they may be little, they surely don't think so. If you are thinking about owning one you should definitely be prepared for vigorous play sessions daily. They also like many other terriers have a strong prey-drive so keeping one with other pets may not be the best choice.

Each of these small dog breeds has the potential to be a marvelous pet. But of course you will want to take some time to make sure you pick a breed that has characteristics that will be well-suited for your living situation and preferences. If you do happiness is just about guaranteed.
