6 Small Dog Breeds You Need To Consider

By Jonathan Atlas

A small pet can provide many advantages. Yet although they may already know they definitely want one, many people are not sure where to begin. So here are six breeds you can't afford to overlook when starting out your search.

A lot of potential owners would like one of the small fluffy dog breeds. If this sounds like you the Pomeranian might be right up your alley. It is instantly recognizable by its orange or reddish fluffy coat. Most people don't realize that despite their size they are actually very good watch dogs since they will alert to any danger.

Unlike its larger cousin which has many well-known health problems the French bulldog never strays far from the top of any small dog breeds list. You can always tell them apart by their ears that resemble that of a bat. If you like wrinkly canines this is a winner.

Without a doubt one of the most famous and popular small dog breeds is the Chihuahua. In fact it is usually the first breed most people think about when talking about little pooches. While they are loyal they are also known to be quite snappy with strangers so you'll need to make sure your friends are aware of this.

Free time is a luxury and not all of us have enough of it to go for long daily walks. When this is the case you can still have a pet just a low energy one. The Pug is a good example and with unsurpassed cuteness it is one of the best small dog breeds for many people.

A huge number of breeds shed quite profusely. This can cause quite a mess at home and on your furnishings which is not what everyone wants. And of course don't forget hair can also stick to your clothing. For those who prefer a fur baby who doesn't shed the Shih-Tzu could be the one. But you will need to take care of their long flowing hair on a regular basis.

The Collie attracts many fanciers but not all of them have the room to keep one. A much more space friendly option that can look remarkably similar is the Shetland sheepdog. But just remember although it may not have the size it still has a lot of energy which will need to be used up in play, exercise, or both.

You may have just found by reading this the right type of pooch for your needs and situation. If not, don't worry these are just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what small dog breeds are available.
