When buying one for breeding purposes then the health of the sheep should be the main concern. It would be a big mistake to start breeding with an unhealthy flock since it will result to failure. A healthy sheep is always alert and stays bright about its surroundings. These animals are meant to stay together since they have a flocking instinct and if one notices an individual sheep moving away from the flock then it has health issues.

A number of reasons can result in sheep being unhealthy. For example, some signs indicating disease include sore mouth lesions, poor body state, respiratory complications, pink eyes, limping and presence of abscesses. If the breeder being considered has a flock with majority of such signs, one is advised to look for another seller.

As stated earlier on, when the intention of purchasing the sheep is breeding, the katahdins may become unsuitable due to a number of defects and medical conditions. One thing to consider is the mouth as a healthy animal should have the lower and upper jaws aligned properly. The incisors also align with the upper jaw. The quickest way to notice this is opening the mouth of the animal and taking a look. The sheep can bite so one should be careful.

It is a common thing to find sheep with a longer upper or lower jaw. This is an inherited defect passed from the parents to their offspring. When the sheep has a short jaw then it will have a hard time grazing on short grass. On the other hand, a small difference in jaw length is not an issue and is acceptable.

The condition of teeth of katahdins usually depend on the diet they are fed and the land where the sheep live. Animals that are fed rough and course diet tend to grind their teeth away faster than those that eat soft pasture and feed. In sheep, the incisors are less important than molars. The molars can be evaluated by feeling the outside of the jaws.

Feet and legs are also of great importance. If the animal is healthy and in good condition, it should have straight legs. The legs should be set squarely on the body. If there are any defects in the legs and feet, the sheep is likely to break down during difficult production conditions. Such sheep should not be bought for breeding.

Finally, one should be careful about the breeder from whom they buy the sheep. The reputation of the breeder should precede them in the market. They should have been in operation for a couple of years and with a good reputation. One must also confirm on their licensure status as this is a major requirement.
