Searching Old English Sheepdog Breeders To Find Your Dog

By John Brown

This loving, loyal dog is available in more than one way. However, Old English Sheepdog breeders is one way to be sure of what you are getting. They specialize in this breed, and have pedigreed dogs that you can feel confident with. It is a good way to get one, if you are careful in choosing a breeder, though not the only way. They can be a bit pricey, however.

A rescue dog is another way to get one, however it is not without concerns. Most have been abandoned, not because of personality, but because of grooming difficulties. It is also a very big dog, which the owner might not have expected when they got that cute little puppy. I has many great traits, loving and loyal, but many don't choose to keep them because they don't want to groom them, so give them up to a rescue shelter.

These dogs are very loving and very loyal, and are often attributed to herding a child to stay in an area that is appropriate. This gave them the descriptive name, "Nanny, " early on. But, as with any dog, they should not be left unattended with a child. There is no way of telling what might happen, say if the child were to hit it or get too rough.

Though this dog is very pleasant as a pet, it does have high maintenance issues. They have special grooming needs due to their coats, and they need lots of exercise due to their size. They do okay in apartments as they are not excessive barkers, but their size may make a small apartment a little difficult. These things should be taken into consideration before making the choice to get one, either new or from a rescue facility.

Several tasks come easy for the dog. They are good at herding, agility, obedience trials, and search and rescue exercises. They are very active dogs, and love to be kept busy. If left for long periods with engaging them in activity, you may find much mischief that he has gotten into while you were gone.

A thick, dense double coat are typical of this dog. He is very muscular as well, with big, strong bones and a large behind. His very large, square head gives him lots of room for a large brain that gives him much intelligence. This means he must be kept busy to keep him out of mischief. He has brown or blue eyes, and sometimes one of each.

This dog runs with a bear-like shuffle, but are very nimble. They require regular exercise to keep their strong, able body in shape. They make great house dogs. They are watchful, courageous, kind, and intelligent. They are patient and protective with children, and make good watch dogs. They have a loud, ringing bark that makes them great as a watchdog, but do not bark excessively.

It is very important to understand what you are getting into if you plan to get a rescue dog. They are usually abandoned for some reason, not usually for temperament but because of the degree of care required or their huge size. Either the owner has chosen not to care for them or can't do so, meaning they are in poor shape, often so matted they have sores on their skin. They often have to be completely shaved. There may also be fecal matter and urine in their coats, as well as infestation with fleas or other insects.
