The Role Of A Dog Diaper And How It Should Be Used

By James Hamilton

Diapers are most associated with young children. However, at times, dogs may need to wear diapers. A dog diaper is specifically designed to be worn by dogs. You may wonder why your pet may ever need a diaper, but there are many reasons why it could need one.

A dog may need to use a diaper due to uncontrolled leakage of urine. Involuntary urination is not a behavioral problem. A number of health issues, including bladder problems, diabetes and a weakened urinary sphincter muscle, cause it. Even the most well trained dogs can have these health problems and therefore urinate involuntarily. When a pet is suffering from involuntary urination, the owner should contact a veterinary doctor. It is possible to treat this condition by performing surgery or using certain medicines. However, if these treatments are not effective, pet owners can use diapers for dogs.

Elderly dogs may be unable to control some bodily functions like defecation and urination. This may occur when the companion animals simply forget what they have learned. Dogs older than eleven can suffer from canine cognitive dysfunction, which is similar to Alzheimers disease. It is possible to treat this disease using certain drugs, but you may still find it necessary to use pet diapers.

Pet owners can also use diapers when the female dogs are in heat. The diapers will help keep the house and furnishings cleaner. They will prevent the dogs from licking their genital area.

Another reason to use diapers is when house training your pet. However, you also need to be concerned about your pet, rather than just the carpets and furniture in your home. Therefore, even if you choose this house training method, you should still take your pet outside regularly, without the diaper so that it can learn where it is really supposed to relieve itself.

You can choose to buy cloth or disposable canine diapers based on your preferences. If you prefer to use products that are friendly to the environment, then you can opt for cloth diapers since you can wash and reuse them. However, these diapers have a higher initial cost compared to the disposable ones. It is also not be pleasant to clean dirty diapers. The disposable diapers offer the benefit of ease of use. Nonetheless, they are not eco-friendly since they are disposed in landfills. The cost of using disposable canine diapers, can also add up over time.

Diapers for dogs have variations in absorbency and fit. Therefore, it is vital to follow the product instructions for measuring and select the right absorption level. You should also change the diapers frequently. Do not let your pet be uncomfortable in a full or wet diaper. Soiled diapers can also cause diaper rash in dogs. The dogs may then experience itching, burning, inflammation and bacterial infections.

As they change the diapers, dog owners can use baby wipes. They should also wear gloves so that they will not come into contact with urine or fecal matter. Canine diapers have a hole for the tails of dogs. If a dog has a docked tail, the owner should cover the hole on the diaper before using it to prevent leakage.
