Causes of dog flatulence?

By Jerry Welsh

Dogs have an unexplainable fondness for something smelly. Dogs have the disgusting habit of drinking from the toilet bowl, eating their own and other dog's poop as well as rolling on rotting animals. Would it be surprising if the dog "freshens" the air by letting the anus detonate small bombs? Dogs, like their human friends fart and when the silent and deadly gasses are emitted, the room would be cleared instantly. The deadly gasses form the dog's anus would not be dangerous to human health but of course no owner would want to constantly open windows and doors or to leave the room every time the dog farts.

Gas, farting or flatulence are one and the same. The gas that develops inside the dog's digestive tract is a combination of oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, methane and hydrogen sulfide. The gas in the intestine is produced through the reaction of bacteria to the process of digesting the swallowed food. Another source of flatulence is the gas in the intestines from the blood as well as from the air swallowed by the dog when eating or drinking. The type of food eaten, the amount of air that is swallowed when the dog eats and the interaction of bacteria with the digestive process contributes to the production of gas.

Dogs have gained a reputation for being fast eaters. Foods, especially large chunks are gulped down by dogs. The behavior of gulping down food was a carry-over trait from the dog's ancestors. Gobbling the food was attributed to the scarcity of food in the wild that necessitates animals to eat fast so as to prevent other animals and even other dogs in the pack to steal the hunted prey. Large amounts of air that gets swallowed with the food will be deposited in the intestines.

Gas is a byproduct produced through the natural process of food digestion. Production of gas is more enhanced in older dogs as the intestines' muscular tone is weakened as the dog matures. Some types of foods are known to cause flatulence. Some of the foods that causes excessive farting are dairy products, sweet potatoes, cauliflower and beans. Low quality dog food enhances the production of gas in the intestines.

To reduce the pet's tendency to fart you can lessen the food ration of the dog to prevent gulping of food. Another remedy to lessen the dogs tendency to fart is to provide the dog with expensive but good quality dog food.
