Reasons why dogs eat vomit

By Jerry Welsh

Dogs have gained a reputation for being indiscriminate eaters. A dog owner would be aware that the pet have the tendency to eat revolting things. Dogs would not pass up the chance to feast on the contents of the trash can in spite of the fact that they are regularly provided nutritious food. Dogs also have the disconcerting habit of eating their own and other dog's poop. Dogs drink water from toilet bowls. Humans most loved pets have the unaccountable predilection for vomit as well.

Dogs have always been man's best friends. In spite of the fact that this association has gone on for thousands and thousands of years, our four legged friends still manifest behaviors that are perplexing to man. Feces, spoiled food and vomit are considered as gross by human but these are gourmet food for the dog.

No clear cut reason was given for the dog's penchant to eat vomit in spite of the studies conducted on canine behavior. It was speculated that eating vomit is an ingrained habit that was passed on to present day dogs by their ancestors. Dogs eat the vomit to cover up their presence from predators. Feces and vomitus would give away the presence of dogs thus they are eaten. The feces and vomit eating habit is a self preservation act of the dog.

Wolves are the ancestors of modern day dogs. It is the custom of wolves to hunt together and to help in caring for the pups. Wolves would return to the den after feeding on the prey to regurgitate food on the waiting mouths of the pups. Vomit will be viewed by a dog as regurgitated food. After years of domestication, dogs would still manifest the habit of eating regurgitated food.

Dogs, as mentioned are voracious eaters. Vomit is partially digested food that would have an obnoxious smell for humans but would be very interesting for the dog. Dogs have the disconcerting habit of eating rotten foods so why would they pass up the chance to devour the still warm and lip-smacking goodness of the vomit.

Eating vomit is not really a dangerous habit of the dog. Eating vomit would not be life threatening unless the vomitus is laced with poisonous substances. An owner may not be too concerned with the disgusting habit of the pet. On the other hand, pet owners that usually receive sloppy kisses from the pet may need to do something. Preventing the dog from vomiting would be rather hard but a pet parent can always stop the dog's repulsive habit by removing the vomit as soon as it is expelled.
