Why do dogs hide their bones under the ground

By Jerry Welsh

Dogs bark, dogs chew and dogs bury bones. Dogs burying bones are often seen in children's books, in the movies and in animated cartoons. Dog owners would know about the dog's puzzling habit.

With a sneaky look on its face, a dog that has a bone on its mouth will look for an ideal spot to hide the "treasure". As soon as the ideal hiding place is found, the dog will dig madly and speedily bury the bone. Do dogs know why these animals are burying bones What encourages a dog to bury bones? The pet may not be aware why it is burying bones as scientists believe that this is an instinctive habit to survive.

Scientists have this theory that the inclination to bury bones is an ingrained habit of canines. From the time dogs have existed, they have been burying bones. Although dogs became man's best friend only for thousands of years; these animals have existed for over a million years. Primitive dogs have lived harsh lives in the wild and the habit of burying foods has been a great help to survive. Primitive dogs have lived difficult lives in the wild. Apart from the need to avoid the predators, dogs have to fight other animals for the prey because food is scarce.

Humans hoard food. Squirrels work long hours to fill their coffers with acorns and nuts. Ants are acclaimed for being industrious as they make it a point to fill their anthill with food. Dogs too hoard and this is done by burying bones and other foods. In the wild, food is hard to come by. Dogs would have to bury the food so that it cannot be discovered by other animals. What was hidden will be uncovered when hunting is nil. The dug up bones will ease the gnawing of the dog's stomach.

Dogs nowadays don't go hungry. Dogs need not bury bones to survive but they do because it is an instinctive behavior. This is why dogs will still bury bones. Bits of food are even seen on the dog's bed and blanket. Because digging and burying bones and other food is instinctive in dogs, pet owners just have to take in stride the inclination of the pet to rearrange the garden to bury its "treasures".
