Details Concerning Australian Labradoodle Therapy Dogs

By Leslie Griffith

If you have been trying to find details concerning Australian labradoodle therapy dogs you may want to consider one as a pet or companion canine. The Labradoodle hybrid breed was originally developed by mixing the breeds of the English Labrador with the Standard Poodle. The animals are classified as being hypoallergenic so people who have severe allergies can own one.

Due to the fact that the dogs usually have a calm nature to them they have been used extensively as therapy and guide companions around the World. One of the first mixed and cross breeding programs was started in Australia by a breeder named Wally Conron who crossed the breeds together. It was believed that the qualities of both breeds could be combined to create a hybrid breed.

Programs in the Australian state of Victoria were some of the first in the world to use the hybrid breed in assisting with patients that needed extra help back in 1988. The breed makes good seeing eye companions as well as canines that are used for relaxation and therapy with patients. Many breeders look for specific traits and characteristics that they breed into the species.

At the moment, there are no major breed associations or kennel clubs in the World that recognize the hybrids as an official registered breed. Some famous people own the hybrid breed such as members of the Norwegian royal family. The Crown Prince and Princess both own one. Labradoodles are not an official breed so they do not have distinctive characteristics that other breeds have.

Labradoodles are usually very friendly and energetic so they do well around families with small children and other animals. The breed usually displays a natural affinity for playing in the water and many times will want to swim when given the opportunity. The dogs can be breed when both parents are already hybrids or when one parent is a Labrador Retriever and the other parent is a Poodle.

The fur can have a wide range of differences from curly, wire textured, and even wooly varieties. Some times a puppy can look more like a Labrador Retriever and other times they may look more like a Standard Poodle and each puppy is unique and can look like a combination of both parents depending on the genetics. Colors will also vary greatly from white, yellow, tan, brown, and black.

Many organizations and clubs exist all over that try to further develop awareness for the hybrid breed. Currently there are not any plans that will officially recognize them as a unique breed because of the fact that they are hybrids and because most people need them for therapy reasons. Puppies can be trained from a very young age to assist with tasks that their owners may want them to help with.
