Is There A Safe E Collar Alternative?

By Annabelle Holman

The Elizabeth collar or the E collar as it is also called is an item that is used by vets when a dog has had an injury. The collar will fit around the neck of the dog and looks like the shade from a lamp. While these can work very well they can really get in the way and are just too big for some dogs. If you are looking to find a good E collar alternative you will be pleased to know you have several options.

When you are looking for an alternative to this type of device you need to keep in mind that the health and safety of your dog is essential. Many people will want to avoid the large Elizabeth collar as it is also known because they can be too big and cumbersome. So here are some of the alternatives that can work well for you and your dog:

Collars that are soft and made from paper instead of plastic are really useful. When they are being used there will allow your dog to move a little as they can bend slightly. One problem with this is that destructive dogs can damage them and get to the area that has been injured

Blow up collars - if you think along the lines of the blow up pillow that goes around your neck you are on the right lines. These are soft, will allow your dog to lie down in comfort and they are very light to wear. These are the best for dogs that are not destructive as some will be able to pop them in seconds if they are a biter.

Neck braces - this might sound a little strange but some dogs who are insistent on chewing, biting and licking their wounds need something that will work effectively. These work just like a normal neck brace that a person would wear, but they are ideal for dogs with upper body lesions. So if your dog has injured his or her front legs or torso they will work very well.

Neck rings - these are not as scary as they sound and are really effective for smaller dogs. The ring is made from a soft material with filling inside and fits around the neck and stops your dog moving its head around as much. This will prevent the dog from getting to the affected area.

Make your own protection for the area of your dog that is affected using old socks, old t-shirts and onesies. Put these on your dog and their wounds will be totally covered and he or she will not be able to get to them. Onesies and t-shirts are perfect for torso injuries while socks work wonders on injuries to the feet and legs.

As you can see there are several good alternatives to the E collar out there. If your dog has been injured and you want to leave the area alone try out one of these methods. In no time at all your dog will have forgotten about their injury and be back on the road to recovery.
