Basics Regarding Toy Husky Dogs

By Leslie Ball

A lot of people have dogs as their pets. These animals are often considered close companions to family. There are numerous breeds that exist in the modern day, each one has its own special traits. Husky refers to dogs that were traditionally employed for pulling sleds. Northerners considered them distinguished for the fast pulling. Although these are not used entirely for these reasons in the modern day, they are still beloved by humans. They may serve as a domestic breed that people own as pets. The toy husky refers specifically to the smallest version of this breed.

Most of these animals have a lot of energy and great athleticism. They usually have a thick coat of fur, which may be red, white, gray or black in color. Huskies typically have pale blue eyes, although these can also be yellow, green and brown. It is typical for these animals to have two different colors of eyes, a trait referred to as heterochromia.

Historically, these animals were bred in norther regions for hunting and sled-pulling purposes. They are now seen in many different areas of the world. Most have been domesticated and serve as pets. It is believed that this breed is a direct descendant of wolves in the wild.

Generally speaking, these animals are considered landrace breeds. They are most commonly found among the indigenous people of the Arctic. Huskies are said to be among the oldest breeds of dog to exist. There are many different types, such as: American Akita, American eskimo dog, Alaska Klee Kai, Canadian eskimo dog, Alaskan, Labrador, Alaskan malamute, Mackenzie River and more.

The mini or toy versions of these animals is made possible through the breeding process. It began during the late 1990s when Bree Normandin was selectively breeding huskies into more compact size. Standard dogs who were notably small would be mated in order to propagate their small gene and pass it to their puppies. The American Kennel Club does not consider these mini or toy dogs to be their own separate breed. Instead, they are just listed as part of the size variation in this breed.

Small versions will usually have the same characteristics of the normal sized ones. Although, the personalities of dogs will vary. Animals are expected to do well with families and kids, even getting along well with strangers. They play and work hard, and are usually gentle. Toy huskies are not expected to be larger than 13 inches, miniatures are often no bigger than 15 inches and both of these are usually under 40 pounds in weight. The standard husky is around 15-17 inches when fully grown.

People can get these animals through various breeders, pet stores and shelters. The cost to purchase them will vary, but may be more expensive than standard huskies or other breeds. It is important to do adequate research on this dog to learn what is necessary to keep it happy and healthy. Background checks on breeders is encouraged to ensure no foul play.

Pet owners might prefer to have small dogs for a number of reasons. Typically, they are easier to care for and can function well in small spaces. People who get toy versions can expect the standard characteristics in this breed, but in an animal that is smaller and easier to manage.
