What You Should Know About Products For Blind Dogs And Caring For Them

By Tammie Caldwell

Some dogs are born unable to see, while others lose their vision later in life. Even if your canine loses its vision later in life it can still live a happy and productive life. Stores carry many products for blind dogs that can aid them. A pup will generally do better in life if the owner does not over compensate by giving too much sympathy. Treat your pet as normally as possible so he or she will feel normal.

In order for your dog to have a content life, it must feel like every other dog. Do not treat it any differently. Dogs are adaptable, they also have an amazing memory. Your pooch will likely get around your home with little or no problem, just from memory.

Dogs get out of the house and get lost every day. This is dangerous for any animal, but especially for a vision impaired one. A medical tag will alert a good Samaritan who may see the canine to his particular vision issues. This will help the good Samaritan help your pet, which will hopefully get him back to you as soon as possible.

Pet stores sell special harnesses for vision impaired dogs. The harness is worn like a traditional harness, but a protruding device is positioned in front of the animal's head. This device will bang into something before your pet. This protects her from bumps and bangs. She is also alerted to items in front of her when the device encounters something.

A canines sense of smell is much better than a humans. They often seek out and find things by scent. Therefore markers can be used to lead your pet to items that it must reach. For example, their water dish, food dish, or even their bed. These types of objects can be placed indoors or outdoors. They are also reusable and can be refreshed over and over again.

A special leash can help both you and the dog. There are leashes designed to help you, help your dog navigate through the home, yard, or anywhere. If you dog needs some help, put this short leash on him or her and steer him in the right direction.

One reason that your animal may not be able to navigate your home is if you have remodeled or rearranged things. It is best not to do this if your dog cannot see. Doing so can disorient a dog. This will cause stress and anxiety.

Relax and make it a point to keep your pet happy and loved. Do the same things that you used to. Only adjust for her limitations. You can still have fun, and still enjoy your time together just like you always did. She is the same dog, and she still loves you, just as you still love her. There is no reason to coddle. Let her enjoy her life as much as possible. In other words, let her be a dog.
