Information On Labrador Retriever Breeder

By Jerry Miller

Many breeders have been attracted to the business of dog breeding because it is lucrative. However, not all breeders know what they are doing. Some only get into the business for the money. Buyers have a hard time telling breeders who are only interested in the money from genuine ones. That has made finding a good Labrador retriever breeder difficult, especially for people who lack knowledge. This article offers help with choosing breeders.

To find a responsible breeder, many sources recommend going to dog shows to gain access to many breeders and AKC marketplace. One can gain additional information on a specific breed by visiting its parent club. For people living in the United States, it is easy to find the parent club within any locality through the website of the American Kennel Club.

Some breeders take the habit of breeding as a hobby that they only engage in during their free time. Such breeders usually have some other full-time occupation somewhere else. When that kind of breeder is the first one to come across, it is likely that one may be turned off about the whole idea of obtaining a puppy. However, the best way to avoid that is to visit several other breeders and do a comparison. To buy a good dog, one should ensure that the seller has an extensive amount of knowledge and experience.

Before one settles for a given breeder, they must make sure that they visit the facility where they conduct their breeding. It is good to see the parents that birthed the puppies before buying. The appearance and temperament of the puppies after they are grown can be determined by their parents. One should check elsewhere if they are not pleased by the parents.

When making a visit, one should observe the premises carefully. The facility should be in good condition and tidy. There should not be any kind of odors coming from the premises. The puppies should also be clean, friendly, lively, and well fed. One should pay attention to signs of malnutrition or illness. Malnutrition is indicated by protruding rib cages while illness is indicated by skin sores, lethargy, coughing, and runny nose or eyes among others.

The interaction between the breeder and the dogs should also be observed carefully. The dogs should be happy to meet the individual while the seller should show genuine love for them. Improper handling can be indicated by dogs that appear scared of the seller. Good puppies are those that interact freely with strangers too.

It is very important to have a good relationship with the seller. This way, one can gain more information about the animal before buying. One can also be able to call the seller in case there is an incident with the dog. Some breeders provide contracts for buyers to sign, which allow breeders to reclaim their dogs if good care is not being provided by the buyer. That is what most responsible breeders do to protect their animals from abuse.

It is very important to allow the puppies to reach a good age before taking them away from their mother. For proper growth and well-being, the puppy needs to mature and socialize with its littermates and mother enough before being separated. Thus, only puppies older than 12 weeks should be bought.
