Canine First Aid By Experienced Pet Vet

By Roger Morgan

Emergencies are normal for pets as they are for human beings. Some of the situations that may be regarded as emergency include when your dog has swallowed a poisonous substance, is involved in an accident or has suffered heat stroke. There are many other unique situations which call for canine first aid that saves the condition of the pet from deterioration. To arrest such situations before they become fatal, here are expert tips.

Be observant about the behavior of your dog. The idea is to collect as much information within a short time to report to your veterinary doctor. Observe whether the dog is too weak to rise, depressed, breeding, having difficult breathing and any other sign of danger. When you talk to the vet, these are the signs you will be expected to provide. Check to see the source of pain if any.

Remain at a safe distance and take precaution to protect the other people around. Animals in distress are known to be aggressive even to their handlers and owners. They will even bite you if you try to touch them. Remaining calm also sends a message to your dog that all is well. If people around panic, the animal will react aggressively and may cause more harm.

Do not take any action until you get directions from your vet. The phone numbers of your nearest vet should be close by all the time. The information you have been gathering through observation or witnessing is what you pass to the veterinary once the call goes through. In the absence of the vet, staff at the clinic will issue intervention directions to enable you manage the condition until the doctor arrives. A pen and paper should be nearby to enable you take instructions.

It is common for dogs to bite when in distress. They will even turn against their owners and handlers. A muzzle will help you restrain the dog. It is usually tied behind the ears to restrain the jaws. Do not use the muzzle if your dog displays signs of difficulty with breathing. Small pets may be restrained using the thick towel until your vet arrives.

Medicine is not to be administered until a prescription by a vet. Medicine from the last encounter may also have turned poisonous. Only a qualified vet has the power to administer medicine. Further more, each condition requires different medicines. For instance, a fracture is treated differently from a bee sting.

Restrict the movement of your dog until the arrival of the doctor. The aim is to prevent the danger from escalating. In such delicate instances like broken bones, the fracture may worsen the situation. Place the canine on a board for easy transfer to the doctor. Get to the vet in the shortest time possible for quick medical attention.

It helps to have a pet first aid kit near you all the time. Keep such substances as surgical tapes, bandages, thick towel and sterile absorbent gauze, among others. Scissors and Elizabethan collar will also help in case of an emergency. Through you provide emergency care, the pet must be taken to the doctor as soon as possible.
