What You Need To Know About The African Grey Parrot As A Pet

By Rod Fraser

There are several considerations that you should give some thought to before choosing a pet. No pet should be selected casually. Any animal represents a big commitment, and should be thought about fully before any choice should be made. If you are interested in getting an African grey parrot, you would do well to learn all you can about them before making a choice.

The first thing that you might want to consider is the lifespan of the animal. With some birds living as long as fifty years you might be in a position to have this pet for a long time, far longer then a dog or a cat. You might even be looking at owning this animal for the rest of your life. This is a good thing to consider, especially if you share your home with others.

Considering all the different kinds of pets available, then you should know these birds are considered to be very demanding. Making sure that you are able to properly provide and care for them can best be done before you have made any lasting choice. Making sure you have enough space for them is another important thing you should think about. They require more space then you might think.

If you have any reservations about owning such a high maintenance animal, you may want to decide on getting another type of pet. If you don't have the time, or the space to properly care for them, then it might be time to admit that now. Not having made any commitment, you are free to change your mind.

Should you know of another owner it would be helpful to speak with them first. Knowing what you are getting into based on a first hand account might give you a lot of insight. You may even be able to spend some time with someone else's pet as well. This can be a good experience, more so if you have never done it in the past.

Some helpful ideas might be to talk with a breeder or a specialist before hand, in order to have all of your questions answered. In addition to that, you might want to speak with someone who already owns one. You can learn a lot from someone in that position.

If you have done all of the reading you can, then you will be able to make a more informed choice. Not rushing into ownership of such an animal is a really good idea. Do all that you can to learn about your African grey parrot before you decide on anything further.
