Managing Your German Shepherd's Aggressive Behavior

By Chris Miller

The German shepherd is reputed as one of the best breeds in the world. They are faithful, clever and can risk their life to save their owner. But there is a certain type of owner that can deal with a German shepherd well. A German shepherd will need an owner who cares intensely enough to invest time and effort into training the dog.

It is important to know methods to stop a German shepherd belligerence because they're very large dogs that grow to about 22 to 26 inches. In addition, they have a strong jaw that can produce a bite with a force of 238 pounds! No wonder they are utilized as security dogs and police dogs.

But don't give up on owning a German shepherd simply because they can be a handful. A number of particular qualities can displace the dog breed qualities. In fact, with proper training, you can condition your dog to follow your orders.

What prompts a German shepherd to be aggressive?

Aggression is a feature of the dog breed, that may deter his training's advancement. Therefore, if you are planning to own a German shepherd make sure you read up well about it. What you can't do is be provoking yourself with regards to stopping his aggressive conduct. Why? It will exasperate your dog even more and disturb him or her.

Aggression can exhibit through growling behavior or barking. German shepherds as a whole are very territorial. He or she might even show their suspicious harmful side when they're eating.

Aggression may be prompted by lack of mingling. Puppies may be adjusting awkwardly to being separated from the litter. Expect unease in crowds.

On the other hand, some shepherds are aggressive because they have suffered neglect from the hands of their preceding owners. This causes them to be on guard when they're around humans because these poor creatures mistrust individuals due to their previous owners.

Your German shepherd may also be adjusting to the hierarchy in the home. After all, there can only be one Alpha dog in a household!

How can you manage your German shepherd's aggression?

Luckily, there are numerous books that teach about German shepherd conduct.

As his or her owner, it is best to establish who the master is when you bring your dog home. For training to progress, this should be established first. Being a leader can be so simple as giving commands in a clear tone of voice. Don't give it a free rein or give into its poignant brown eyes!

If you show any sign of weak point then the German shepherd will try to be the Alpha dog of the home and will fight you constantly for the role. However, if you set the rules from day one that ONLY you're the boss, the German shepherd won't ever question your authority. Why is that? This dog breed is the happiest when it is under the control of an Alpha leader.

He wants training day after day. Training day by day will ensure that your dog does not stray from the right path. Keep your dog active and in training. Teach essentials like barking on command, sitting and lying down. Easy things to do include ordering your canine to sit whenever you give him a treat. Only give the reward when your dog obeys! This conditioning will reinforce the fact that you are the boss! This can be a essential psychological technique for training a German shepherd.

Finally, provided you're firm but kind to your dog, it will learn to stop being aggressive at your command!

  1. All dog needs proper training it's not from the breed and kind. You can even change attitudes by training alone because that's always the best way. I'm glad to know that there are some remedies but curing the problem is the best way for me I think. I have long been training my dog myself ever since he was young and, aggressions, change of moods and anything could really come on your way. That's why dog training is always the best cure. I have been using this site --> www.dogtrainingasleader.com/ ever since. I really love this site's training videos which has helped me in a lot of ways and so, by this I don't have to hire a personal trainer that would only cost me much. This has helped me and has been really effective for me and my dog and would like to suggest it as well. :)
