Does a Kyi-Lio Make a Suitable Pet

By Jerry Welsh

Not many dog breeds are into performing tricks but have you been wowed by a small dog that tosses and catches balls, one that makes graceful dips and turns as it dances on its hind legs? It is apparent that the dog loves the attention of people. The dog gains attention not only because of the tricks but also because of its attractive appearance. Miniature dogs are as lovable as puppies but this particular dog is made even more lovable because its well proportioned body is well covered with longish straight or wavy hair that is silky to the touch and comes in black in white or white and gold color combination. The beard and the whiskers add to the attractive appearance of the dog. This wonderful dog is a Kyi-Leo, the breed with a copyrighted name.

The Kyi-Leo is a fairly new breed developed from the mating of a Maltese and a Lhasa Apso. Development of this breed occurred in San Francisco Bay area during the 1950s. Leo in the breed name refers to the Maltese which is also known as Lion dog and kyi, the Tibetan word for dog gives credit to the Tibetan Lhasa Apso.

The Kyi-Leo is another breed under the lap dog umbrella. Similar to the Shih Tzu, Pomeranian, Maltese and Lhasa Apso, this miniature dog is people oriented. The Kyi-Leo is a good choice for a pet. This affectionate dog bonds closely with the family. This happy dog is active and playful thus it makes a wonderful playmate of the kids especially because it is not easy to provoke. Being a lap dog, the Kyi-Leo would appreciate being cuddled and petted by its favorite people.

A Kyi-Leo can be a good watch dog because it is wary of strangers and it also has sensitive hearing abilities. However, don't expect the dog to accost an intruder as this "all bark and no bite" dog would hide in the corner or behind its master if the stranger advances. This peace-loving dog will avoid any kind of altercations. This breed would be an ideal pet for an apartment dweller as it does not really have high exercise requirements. This dog would make a lively playmate of the children but supervision is necessary given that these are delicate dogs and boisterous children can inadvertently hurt the dog.

The Kyi-Leo is recognized as a legitimate breed by ARBA (American Rare Bred Association). In spite of being a fairly new breed, the Kyi-Leo has gained a large following. A lot of these dogs have become pampered lap dogs of celebrities. Maria Carey is only one of the celebrities that own Kyi-Leo pets.
