guidelines on how to start a dog training plan

By Theda Meighan

Dog training is a long and tedious process. Unfortunately, both the dog and the owner are fully responsible for the animal's behavior. Dogs will need to build a strong bond with their masters. After this occurs, it will be time to ensure their obedience with other animals and humans. This will begin with some very basic commands and once the master role is set, more complicated commands can follow.

Wolves live in packs in the wild where they follow the leader. Dogs are exactly the same way. They will see you and your family as a pack. Being at the very top will be the master. This clears up any confusion animals may have. They need to know that you are the leader. Otherwise, they will start to disobey you. Fortunately, the leader role is easily gained by giving them food and making them follow commands. This sounds simple, but it is the most important aspect of training. Utilize their natural behaviors to your own training benefits.

Commands should always be met with a positive response. This is a goal that must be set by the trainer before they start training. Communication between the master and canine must always be met appropriately. Naturally, animals wants to make their owners happy, so if this is met with hesitation, the training methods in use might not be working correctly. This is a hard part for the trainer because they need to adapt their ways for each specific animal. However, patience and persistence has shown to be the most vital traits during this process. Be calm, and make this a learning experience.

One method that seems to work well with all animals is the reward system. Essentially, every time an animal does something correctly, they are given a treat. While this may seem very simplistic, it works extremely well because the animal has positive reinforcement when they do something correctly. When a command is met accurately, gently pet the dog, praise them and give them a tasty treat. This will let them know that they did something good, and they will be inclined to do it again. Once a dog learns a command, ensure that they are told this command every few days. This will keep them obedient for a long time and not impede the progress they have already made.

If keeping a consistent training schedule is difficult, it might be time to find a trainer. These individuals should have the appropriate certifications to train animals and will be able to teach them with ease. Even the most stubborn pooches have turned into obedient dogs by way of a seasoned trainer. They have the knowledge to adapt their ways to each dog's learning patterns.

Owners can help the process by making sure they have all of the appropriate training items on hand before the dog comes home. This items should include a dog bed, training crate, training gates, chew toys, leashes and a collar. This will help get the training process started because all of these items will be enough to train any dog.
