By Ina Hunt

Beautiful Shih Tzu, or Lion dogs, are today popular all over the world. Although this breed exists for centuries, their first appearance outside of their homeland, China, happened in 1930s. These dogs are small, clever, lively and adorable, and anyone will enjoy having them as pets. There are several reliable Shih Tzu breeders in Ohio, and each of them will be happy to give you more info about this great breed.

These little dogs have their own opinion about things, they are energetic, playful and affectionate. Although small, they make very good alert dogs. Eager to learn new things, they can be trained quite successfully. Intelligent and funny, beautiful and small enough to live even in a small apartment, these doggies are really irresistible.

Some pets need a strong leadership, and Shih Tzu is certainly one of them. You need to start training your doggy very early, and you need to be consistent and firm pack leader. It might be harder than you think, because these adorable hairballs are impossible to resist, but it is really important. Some dogs might become unmanageable as adults.

Although Shih Tzus come in all possible colors, some are more popular than others. With the exception of liver colored and blue colored ones, they should have black noses, eye rims and lips. These two colors have liver or blue colored parts. Beautiful, round, large eyes are usually dark, or even black, but some varieties might have light brown eyes for example.

Luxuriously long and dense double coats need daily grooming. Thanks to the fact they shed very little, or don't shed at all, it makes them more than suitable for people suffering from allergies. Allergies are actually caused by skin dander, not hair, and low shedding and non-shedding breeds are always more appropriate choice for people prone to allergies.

Although this little dog is mostly full of energy, he will spend it all playing in your home. Even so, it is always advisable to provide daily walks to all dogs, however small they are. It keeps them healthy and strong, and they will surely appreciate it. These dogs need your love and attention, and you will enjoy in your walks together as well.

Their short legs and long backs are the main reasons for their occasional spinal diseases. Most Shih Tzus have very sensitive eyes, and they need to be cleaned regularly. Anti-inflammatory drops prescribed by vet will probably solve most similar problems. Some dogs might have problems with their ears as well. Don't be surprised if you hear your puppy snoring, but tell your vet about it anyway.

The good thing about most small breeds is that they live considerably longer. Shih Tzu dogs live for more than fifteen years, some even more than twenty. Of course, they have to be healthy and well maintained. They gain weight easily, and it is important to give them appropriate amounts of food only. They need to have enough fresh water, they have to be groomed regularly and to get enough opportunities to walk and play. But the most important thing for them is to be loved by their owners.
