Information On Veterinarian In Huntington Beach

By Tammie Caldwell

The abbreviation vet comes from the word veterinary. Veterinary medicine is a profession that is practiced by veterinary physicians. These physicians handle the treatment, diagnosis, study, and prevention of various medical problems in animals. Their practice is confined to animals only and not human beings. In Britain, the word veterinary surgeon is used while Australia and the US, the term veterinary physician is preferred. Any veterinarian in Huntington Beach has the right qualification to offer several services related to the field of veterinary to the public.

The usage of the title veterinarian is protected and controlled by the government in most countries. Only people who have attained the right academic qualification can use or be addressed by the title. Besides attaining necessary academic qualifications, one must also be certified and registered as a veterinarian. It is a legal offence to use the title without the necessary qualifications.

In most cases, veterinarians work in clinical settings where they treat animals directly. The field also has some level of specialization so that practitioners can specialize in treating a given type of animals. Others also opt to treat animals of all kinds. Some of the groups of animals in which practitioners can specialize include zoo animals, livestock, equines, and companion animals.

The roles and responsibilities of veterinarians are very wide and diverse. They offer diagnosis services, treat medical conditions, and provide aftercare. Since experience varies among practitioners, the kind of intervention a practitioner gives also varies. However, most practitioners opt for surgery. Surgeries vary a lot in their level of complexity. Physicians rely heavily on clinical signs since animals cannot talk to explain what they feel like humans do.

Care offered in veterinary medicine is related to that offered in human medicine in many aspects. First, a lot of emphasis is given to prophylactic treatment to offer prevention against future diseases and medical condition. As such vaccines are given to protect against diseases like rabies and distemper. Dental diseases are also prevented through dental prophylaxis. In some cases owners are educated so that they know how to prevent possible instances of certain diseases.

Like other fields of study, veterinary medicine also has specialties in which practitioners can specialize. Some of the general topics covered by specialties include dentistry, surgery, and anesthesia. Some focus may also be given to organ systems under specialties like dermatology and cardiology. Unlike traditional medicine, veterinary medicine combines surgical and medical aspects of biological systems.

The US private sector employs more veterinarians than the public sector. It has been found that over 75% of all workers are employed in the private sector. Some specialize in research and work in research laboratories and facilities. Some of the places where workers who treat small animals work are veterinary hospitals and schools. On the other hand, those who treat big animals may work in charities, colleges, zoos, farms, animal food companies, and pharmaceutical companies.

This field pays fairly well in the US. The salary earned depends on experience and academic qualifications achieved. Those with more experience and higher academic achievement generally earn more. Workers in the public sector also tend to earn lower than those employed in the private sector. For some time now, there has been a debate about various cosmetic issues like docking of tails, debarking of dogs, cropping of ears, and declawing of cats.
