What To Consider When Shopping For Clothing And Onesies For Dogs

By Elaine Guthrie

If you have a dog, you may be considering purchasing it some clothing. There are so many different choices on the market so it can be hard to decide which piece are the right ones for your canine. Whether you are looking for onesies for dogs or other types of garments, here are some tips and tricks that you can use to find the right ones for your pampered pooch.

While many people only think that small dogs can wear clothing, the fact is that larger dogs can wear these types of items too. The reasons that you may have to dress a larger dog up may differ from the reason that you might put clothing on a toy or miniature breed but you can get the same enjoyment from putting onesies on larger breeds as well.

If you have a dog that belongs to a short-haired breed, you may be surprised at how quickly they can become cold and uncomfortable in extreme weather. Some thin-coated dogs do not have enough hair to help them regulate their body temperature. In this case, a dog such as a greyhound, a chihuahua or a boxer may do much better if they are able to wear a poncho or other type of coat that will help keep them warm.

Although foot coverings can look cute they can also be very practical as well. Often, dogs will cut their foot pads on ice or hard snow and these cuts can become infected quite quickly. A pup can also become ill if they lick salt off of their paws and end up ingesting antifreeze or other toxins.

Some individuals like to dress their dogs up for other reasons. They may want more decorative clothing items such as onesies, dresses or other fancy outfits. Some owners may want to match their pooch's outfit to their own. Some ensembles can be quite elaborate and have large price tags to match.

The reason you are dressing up your dog will really impact what kinds of clothes you buy for it. Protecting a dog from cold temperatures or the rain will mean that you will be looking for certain qualities. If you were dressing up the same dog for a special occasion, chances are there are different features or factors that you would consider when deciding whether or not to buy a particular clothing item.

Measuring your dog isn't hard but it is important. You cannot simply go by breed and weight alone to pick sizes. Most size charts will base sizing on how large a pet's ribcage is and how long its torso is. Other types of clothes, such as boots, may also ask you to figure out how large a dog's paws are or ask you to take other measurements to ensure a good fit.

Looking online can be a great place to start. There are many sites that offer these items. You may also be able to find some great deals by looking at on sale items instead of full priced ones. Then you can enjoy putting your pup in many different clothing combinations and bask in the attention that they get from the people around them.
