How To Choose The Correct Buckle Dog Collars For Your Pampered Pooch

By Ronald Hall

If you have a dog you want the accessories that you buy to work well and be comfortable and enjoyable for your pet to wear or use. Buckle dog collars are no exception to this rule. They are useful for controlling your dog and are a great way to highlight the relationship you have with your dog. Here are some tips you can use to make selecting a particular collar easier and less stressful.

If you haven't owned a dog for some time, you may be surprised by all of the choices that are available nowadays. In the past, collars were only available in a few basic materials and styles. Now, however, there are options that range from plain and utilitarian to extremely decorative but less practical. There are even options that can be customized so that they suit your lifestyle and your dog's activity level.

One thing to consider is whether you will be using the collar to tie your dog out. This can be a great way for you to allow your dog to get some fresh air and exercise even if you do not have a fenced yard. If you will be doing so, you should consider looking for one with a metal buckle rather than one that comes with a plastic clasp.

Some models are more adjustable than others. If you have a canine that will change size quite a bit over time, you may want to avoid a buckling version and use one that can adjust more easily to your pet. If you love the look of a buckle, you may find that you will need to buy a smaller size now and then replace it as your pet grows.

Some materials are better for certain activities than others. If you are using your dog for hunting or it will be going in the water on a regular basis, choosing a material that will not rot when it gets wet is a good idea. Some materials have anti microbial properties that will help reduce odor and make it less likely to irritate the dog's skin.

When it is time to go shopping, you should look at the construction of any collar you are considering. Make sure that any stitching looks durable and is not frayed or damaged. Make sure that the buckle works well and that it is not a struggle when it is time to adjust the size from hole to hole. If you want a leather option make sure it is supple and soft enough that it will not irritate your dog's skin.

There are many places that you can find these items. Pet specialty stores will often have different options that you can look at and, if dogs are allowed in, you may even be able to bring your dog to try on a particular collar. Hardware stores that have a pet section may also have a few options to choose from. There are also websites specializing in pet products that would have some to choose from.

You may want to try fitting your dog directly in order to make sure that it fits and is comfortable for your pet. If not, you may find yourself trying on a few different options that can end up costing time and money. It can be worth it all though, to make sure that your dog is both comfortable and safe.
