The English bulldog cab be regarded as a dog that is compact and wide, has short legs and is medium sized. It is a a canine that originated from England, and was bred there originally with an ancient Asian mastiff line. It was used for arena fighting in the past against full grown bulls, a practice which has now been outlawed. Despite this tough and violent past, the current generations of this breed have a totally different temperament.

Despite its intimidating looks, the breed is considered to be among the gentlest of canine breeds. The bulldog requires a strong owner who will not allow it to fall into alpha dog behavior. It must be made to feel it is part of a pack and not leading it. Small spaces are not a major problem with this dog. It can actually be classified as an indoor breed. It can be quite comfortable with long periods of inactivity but it is really recommended that it be taken out for a brisk walk at least once a day. This daily walk should compensate for the innate canine instinct to migrate.

This dog is not for you if you currently living in a hot or tropical climate. This dog has problems in regulating its temperature when it is very hot outside. It is also prone to chills when it is very cold. It is really a breed made for more temperate climes.

The breed can have a plethora of medical problems in the long run, and you must be prepared to face up to this eventuality. In time, as they age, they will develop poor eyesight and also become prone to flatulence, although this latter condition is also very much present in those of a younger age. They do also develop their fair share of skin problems and infections, as well as hip and knee problems.

This breed however is easy to groom. This is because of its short and fine fur coupled with its average shedding. It is a good practice to always clean its face, especially between the wrinkles. This face cleaning should be done at least once a day.

All in all it is a challenge to take care of this breed and should only be cared for by someone who is most caring and diligent.
