The French Bulldog, or popularly known as the French Bully, is a mastiff popularized during early Greek times. It was bred for the bloody sport of bull baiting. Phoenician traders were responsible for the dispersal of the breed around Europe. When bull baiting as a sport was outlawed, many of these mastiffs were out of a job and so they were used largely for domestic purposes, such as pets.

The breed is quite similar to the British bulldog, with a compact body and short legs, but being much smaller with more erect ears. In terms of temperament, it is much tamer than its British counterpart, and one will not have a hard time leaving this breed with small children, and also other animals and dogs in the home.

Many attest to these dogs being excellent or great companions, although they do seem to monger attention a lot. When they gee that they are not getting enough attention they will let out a yodel, or what has been termed the French death yodel. The breed is also quite protective, especially the females, of people that are around them Thus you can rest assured that they will guard your kids if you are not around.

This dog, just like its English cousin, also does quite well living in small spaces. It is ideal for someone living in a small apartment or room. They are quite content being inactive most of the time but they still do need space to stretch their legs once in a while. A regular daily walk for about thirty minutes should not hurt anyone. This could possibly be one of the ultimate indoor dogs.

This particular breed also has problems in regulating their temperature, maybe owing to the fact that have much compacted airways attributed to their size as well as coupled with their pug noses. Thus in how temperatures they will have problems breathing. In very cold temperatures they will also be prone to health problems due to their almost furless coats. The best climate for this dog is a temperate one.

Eye problems will be something that the French bully will contend with as age progresses. This is fairly standard for the breed. Additionally this is not a very long lived breed, averaging only eight to ten years in terms of life span. However, lives can be extended of course when proper care, nutrition and maintenance is given.
