Top 3 Ways to Deal With Dogs Fear of Thunderstorms.

By Bev Langford

It is calculated that around 50% of all dogs are adversely impacted by loud unexpected sounds and noises. Many dog owners report that their dogs suffer from acute dog anxiety symptoms when a storm is building and in some cases their dog can become totally uncontrollable and even aggressive.

If your dog is unhappy or acts out of character when a thunderstom hits, you aren't the only one. This is a common problem and here are the three things you can do after you secure your dog.

Offer Food and water.

Give your dog something to eat and drink. Sometimes it can help reduce anxiety responses if your dog has a full stomach. Even giving your dog a bone or chew treats may help to keep his attention off the storm.

Dogs love to eat and gnaw on things and gnawing can also offer your dog an outlet for frustration feelings which might surface during a storm.

Offer Distractions.

Give your dog some distractions like some of his favourite gnaw toys, favourite ball or even a small cardboard box to tear up. Giving your dog some diversions will not 100% fix anxiety feelings for your dog during the intense part of the thunderstorm but it may help while the thunderstorm is building and can scale back your dog's anxious symptoms at that time.

Get your dog an anti-anxiety coat.

Dog anxiety coats and wraps are proved to lessen the level of anxiousness experienced by a dog in a thunderstorm and other occasions when your dog may experience anxiousness issues, such as when travelling in a car. They cost around $40.00 which is a little price to pay to give your dog relief from their anxiety symptoms. Anti anxiety dog coats can be found in a wide selection of sizes to fit your dog.

Dog anxiety coats and wraps are straightforward to fit and use and won't affect your dog negatively at all. They're designed to apply gentle all over pressure across the upper body of your dog and simulate an all over body hug.
