At-home sitting and walking are the most common services offered. Since the setters provide many more services than mere walking, hence they get a better package than what the other walkers usually get.

A pet sitter is better paid than a dog walker as the scope of his job is vaster than that of the latter.

In simple words a pet sitter has to mainly focus on looking after the pets and taking the responsibility of everyday routine activities such as walking, regular feeding, grooming and lastly keeping the pet engaged. At times, on the insistence of the owner a pet may need to be taken to a vet and in such cases the responsibility of administering medication if any lies with the sitter besides taking any precautions mentioned by the vet.

Even though dog owners all have their own leashes for their dogs, it's good to carry two different types of your own when you take over the duties.

Being prepared is the mantra for success. So, although the dog owners will provide you with a leash when you go to walk their dog, yet it will seem professional if you carry an extra set many be two of various varieties with you.

The easiest to use are the leather leashes. They can be held safely without any handicap in handling the dog. However, for dogs that chew on their leashes, it is much better to procure a metal one as it will deter the dog from carrying out any chewing.

If you are a beginner in dog walking then these guidelines will be helpful to you.

1. Avoid taking the dog to the areas where you will find squirrels and other small animals. If these animals are present in good numbers then you will end up getting yourself dragged by the dog as he chases these little creatures in his playful hunt.

2. Although, you may feel that the green grass and gardens are the best place to walk a dog, but these places must be avoided. This is because most often lawns have to be maintained and in order to maintain them pesticides are sprayed on them. Dogs have a very sharp sense of smell and being inherently curious beings they tend to explore the various smells. In the process they may end up inhaling these pesticides. These pesticides contain chemicals which when inhaled wreck havoc in the digestive system of the canines.

3. You must discourage the dog from feeding on greenery on the walk, IF it is a habit of the dog. This is because there always a risk of the dog eating a plant that proves to be lethal for it.

4. In case you decide that the weather is conductive for a long walk then don't forget to carry water with you. Basically a dog has the tendency to get dehydrated in a very short while, therefore to prevent any untoward thing from occurring; it is best safe to be equipped with water.

5. Carry along a few goodies. This will help you to bond faster with the dog. Treating the dog and expressing your affection will make the pet comfortable with you and will make walking easier for you.
