By Elena McDowell

Since urban farming has emerged as a maturing trend, farmers have broadened their animal management skills. More and more people are buying small sized dairy goats. The Nigerian dwarf goats for sale in Georgia are perfectly suitable for this purpose. These miniature sized ruminants have a sociable character and intelligent mind. These lovable creatures are also sought after as pets.

In the United States, this species is mainly popular as a small dairy animal. This is because, in metropolitan areas, space is at a premium. Miniatures require much less space than is required for larger animals. A one hundred thirty five square foot area is sufficient for them.

There are many miniature breeds. But, America only has an African Pygmy and smaller Nigerian Dwarf variety. According to the International Dairy Goat Registry, Nigeria is one of several nations in West Africa where a miniature species is present.

Research has reported three identifiable sizes exist in West Africa. Nigerians reflect the middle sized variants. The Pygmy is a representative of larger sized variants. This information was discussed in greater length at a 1982 conference. This event was the Third International Conference on Goat Production and Disease held in Tucson, Arizona. At this event I. Mecha and C. C. Agunwamba presented a paper containing background information about this species. So far, the smallest variant described in their paper has not been imported into the United States.

The goat species as a genus originates from wild Asian and European natives. Over 300 breeds currently exist. For thousands of years humans have consumed or used their hides, milk, meat, and hair. They have also been kept as pets since the 20th century.

Certain terms are used to label the two sexes and different ages. Females are identified as does and intact males are referred to as bucks. Their young are termed kids. Wethers are males who have been castrated. Nigerian Dwarves can be registered in 3 registries. The Canadian Goat Society, International Dairy Goat Registry and American Goat Society welcome their registration. There is much room for their expansion in America. Competitive shows are increasing in popularity. The American Goat Society has authorized a majority of these so far. A profitable and bright future is expected for them by experts.

Male Dwarves are gentle enough to be used for service by hand breeding. Male Dwarves can breed with many does. Does are usually bred thrice within a couple of years. But, frequency of breeding is a personal choice. A doe may give birth to several offspring during a single pregnancy period. This species matures quickly. They can reproduce when they are young and should be separated as a precaution.

Does may breed at 7 to 8 months of age. Breeders tend to prefer waiting until they are a year old, or a little older. These females will provide a significant amount of milk for their size. Three to four pounds a day is not unusual amount for them. Their milk is sweet and delicious. It contains about 6 to 10 percent of butterfat. Dwarves have coats of many colors. Their normal primary coat shades are black, chocolate and gold. Random white markings, spots and other shades mixed in are common. These shades may change after birth. Color is a major factor of popularity for Nigerian dwarf goats for sale in Georgia.
