Understanding Differences Between American And English Labradors

By Angel Dudley

English Labradors are an excellent breed of dog, but like any other they have special requirements, and not all breeds are like. This should be a major consideration before purchasing this breed or any other breed of dog, that not all breeds are alike. That certainly says it all when it comes to American and English Labradors. Many people don't understand the differences between these two breeds of dogs and in fact mistake them for the species.

Knowing the distinct qualities of a pet will help the pet and the family adjust to each other. Understanding the differences between the American and the English version will help owners to understand how to care of the pet, and what to expect. It will also help understand how long the dog can be left alone, if it is a chewer, jumper, or how to care for it for the best experience.

There are so many features the same in the American and English version that many people consider them the same breed, but they are not. The main difference between the two breeds is what their purpose was when they were originally bred. The two were bred for entirely different reasons, and because of this these predominate features in the personality still exist today. This basic difference should be strongly considered, especially since the American version is a working dog.

Even though these major differences are connected to the American version being bred as a working dog and the English version bred for shows and as a pet, this should still be considered. The main thing to consider is that the fact the American dog was bred as a working dog is very significant to its personality. Leave this species alone long enough, and fail to work the dog through exercise and this difference becomes obvious as the dog attempts to work off energy in ways that may not be beneficial.

The English dogs are smaller, and were bred as pets and show dogs from the beginning. Because of this they are smaller, easier to control, not as restless, and more even tempered. Because they are smaller, and within their personality is a more docile animal, they are not particularly good as working dogs. This difference is extremely important since many owners are not aware of this difference prior to dog ownership.

For those not sure how to distinguish between the breeds pay attention to elements of personality and in their physical appearance. For instance a tall dog will almost always be an American version. Many of them have longer faces and noses, and are much more active.

Stockier dogs, with a shorter body are usually English. They are more likely sitters or those that are not exerting as much high energy as their American counterparts. They are more mild mannered and are better house dogs.

Personality differences can have a strong impact on if a dog fits into a family or not. If the family expectations are different than what they end up with some strong adjustments would need to be made. Consider these big differences in personality and what the dog needs prior to purchasing it. If it is impossible to work the dog daily it is probably best to purchase English Labradors.
