Common Hog Waste Issues Many Farmers Will Face

By Lianne Derocco

Unless a person is into hog farming, he will not know the intricate things to run this business successfully, but this business is a huge one. Hog waste is one concern and issue to be tackled with by the hog farmer. Hog waste can harm the surrounding environment, and this should be prevented, thus the waste should be treated, and storing waste is also one big concern.

The waste should be stored in lagoons and waste pits, and it is important to note that hogs produce lots of waste. Toxic gases such as methane and carbon dioxide, as well as ammonia are released by the hog waste. Antibiotics that are mixed with the feeds can also be found in the waste. There are also harmful things that can be present in the waste lagoons, and these can be bacteria, heavy metals, as well as pesticides.

The gases produced can be harmful to the environment, and substances contained can also be harmful especially if the lagoon leaks and toxins seep into the soil and on to the groundwater. Making sure that the lagoons will not leak or overflow is with much importance. There should be measures taken for the lagoons to be safe, and this should be the priority of the farm owner.

There are also other problems that can occur like top crust formation in the lagoons and sludge formation at the bottom. The waste should be liquefied so that when crust or sludge is slowly forming, a quick action can be done.

However, it is also important that farmers don't add more toxins to the environment, so they need to use a natural product. There are natural solutions for agricultural waste on the market that are ideal to use as a hog manure treatment. Agra Sphere uses a mix of naturally occurring bacteria to eat away at the sludge and the crust, helping to liquefy the waste. There are no chemicals in this product, and the sphere itself is biodegradable and does not need mixing in order to work. You simply toss in enough spheres to accommodate the size of your lagoon or waste pit.

Odor produced by the hog waste will be reduced, including the number of flies in the farm, and this is also one good use of the product. When using Agra Sphere, foaming is reduced, and this is also one problem common in hog farms. The waste can be made into fertilizers, but this should be nutrient rich, and this is an addition of the product, improving the value of the hog waste.
