Essentials Are Must When Considering Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Puppies For Sale

By Janine Hughes

The dogs affectionately known as Swissy, or in some cases, Swissie, are a very large working class breed. Because of their size and heritage it is important that future owners learn some essential characteristics that make them unique from others. Here are some reasons why these animals stand out from the rest.

The best kennels offer open houses so that interested families can visit with their greater Swiss mountain dog puppies for sale. This get together time is a casual meeting with the dogs so that any questions you have may be answered. It also allows prospective owners to see key elements of Swissy behavior.

Some of the more popular questions involve caring for this kind of special pet. They have short coats, but they do benefit from a weekly brushing to help keep minimal shedding at bay. They are often characterized as dogs who drool, but in fact, they have dry mouths. Their reputation for being good with children is excellent. They are easy to bath even though large.

Once a litter of these adorable pups is old enough to leave the kennel for their new homes, they receive a thorough check over by a vet. The doctor will provide any vaccinations necessary, look at their structure, measurements and take their vital signs. Their mouths, noses, and ears will be inspected for good health and a thermometer will be used to gauge temperatures. They will take a bath and have their toe nails clipped. A good play session with their litter will be a nice way to say good bye to their family.

Greater Swissys were originally born and bred in the isolated mountains of Switzerland. They were used to herd and guard livestock and serve as a watchman for their farm. They are large enough to pull loads, so they often did work similar to horses.

Care must be taken when they are exercising in hot weather. They have a chance of overheating due to their thick fur. Some feel they should only live in cold areas. Their strength makes them natural for backpacking and hiking through mountainous regions with their owners. They are known for their carting strengths, and for enjoying working this way.

Greater Swissies have coats of fur that are in a combination of black, rust and white. The black is the main color overall, with white patches often on chests and stomachs, with uniform groupings of rust elsewhere. Their bodies have strong bones and heavy muscles, which make them confident and strong. Their paws, head and chests are large and broad, even from the time they are puppies. It is easy to see that they can be confident and bold.

As gentle giants, they are very well suited to becoming part of a family. Some call them the best pet a family could ever have, because they are truly very loyal to their owners. Their main coat is black, with extra patches of rust and white colored fur. Their markings depend on ancestry, but generally speaking the colored areas tend to be in larger, uniform groupings. Official trainers refer to them as bold and faithful, having a great willingness to pursue working tasks put before them.
