High Quality Horse Boarding Available

By Janine Hughes

Equestrian sports are one of the fastest growing activities in the country. Each year many people learn to ride and take care of these majestic animals. For some people owning their first horse or pony is a dream come true. Not only is this a huge privilege, but also a considerable responsibility. Most people just do not have the space or resources to take care of a big animal at home and need to find a suitable local facility where they can board their animals.

The standards at big boarding facilities can vary tremendously. Owners must be willing to take plenty of time when they are looking for horse boarding available in their area. After all the well being of their animals will depend on their choices. Things to look out for are high standards of cleanliness and hygiene, well trained staff and satisfied owners.

Meeting with the owner or manager of the barn is really important. Not only will this offer an opportunity to learn about their facilities, but more importantly it will give perspective clients a better idea of the standards and care they can expect for their horse. Feeding schedules are something to take particular notice of. Horses have a digestive system that is designed for grazing, therefore they need to be fed little and often. A four times a day feeding schedule is much better than twice a day.

Horses must aways have access to clean, fresh water. Most bigger barns use automatic water systems to each stall. However a smaller barn may still rely on filling buckets several times each day. Both of these systems work as long as the barn staff stay vigilant and always keep a close eye on each and every horse to ensure that they are drinking enough.

The rates for boarding really depend on the level of care provided. Many people have found that do it yourself barns offer a very affordable package. The facility provides the stalls and turn out, but the owners do all the work. This is a great compromise for those who really want to own horses, but do not have enough space at home and are working on a tight budget.

Many new barns today are specially built to make life as easy as possible for both animals and owners. The typically construction is a row of stalls on either side of a wide central aisle. The aisle is used for tying up the horses while they are being groomed or while the stalls are being cleaned. It also allows the horses to see each other but they are not close enough to bite each other.

There are also tack rooms to keep all the saddles, bridles and other equipment that the animals need. Most competition horses also need a range of summer and winter blankets for in the stall, turnout and travelling.

A good boarding barn will have a great atmosphere. Everyone, including staff, owners and horses will be happy and cheerful. Horses quickly pick up on negative feelings from the people around them.
